A Novel Methodology for Engaging Complex Therapeutic Landscapes and Health Care Performances: Theatricality
Complex health care interventions often consist of specific and non-specific effects and can present a methodological and intellectual challenge to researchers. This is especially the case in Complementary and Integrative Medicines (CIM), where research may inadequately capture the holistic nature of therapies, affecting the quality of outcomes and evidence reported. This article introduces a novel approach that advances methodology and helps res…

Publishing a Methodological Mixed Methods Research Article
The abstract includes information about the type of mixed methods design and integration used. The word distribution of the abstract parallels the structure of an empirical mixed methods methodology paper with a 1:2:2:1 words breakdown, so for a 120 word abstract, roughly a 20:40:40:20 distribution (Figure 2). Effective manuscripts start with a statement of the methodological problem to hook the multidisciplinary readership. In this approach, aut…

An Emancipatory Approach to Practice and Qualitative Inquiry in Mental Health: Finding ‘Voice’ in Charles Taylor's Ethics of Identity
The right to ‘voice’ has been identified as central in enabling agency and in ensuring human dignity. This paper discusses an understanding of ‘voice’ which has been derived from Charles Taylor's concept of ‘strong evaluation’. Voice, from this perspective, is found within an ongoing process of identity development which is based on a quest for an authentic sense of self embedded in a moral journey. It is argued here that strong evaluation offers…
What Counts in Mixed Methods Research: Algorithmic Thinking or Inclusive Leadership
(Con) Fusing Commerce and Science: Mixed Methods Research and the Production of Contextualized Knowledge
It was in the mid seventeenth century that Cardinal John Henry Newman (1858), in his foundational text ‘‘The Idea of a University,’’ first clearly articulated the purpose of the University as being about the pursuit of learning. The emphasis was specifically on learning associated with a liberal education based on the tenet that knowledge is valuable in its own right. Nevertheless, this original invocation of the University has been contested lon…
Taking the Time and Trouble With Mixed Methods Research
My personal experience and indeed my academic authorial view of editorials is that they are somewhat akin to the productions by such troupes as the Reduced Shakespeare Company. During which the small cast, normally 3, take long and rather serious subjects, containing significant motifs, and reduces them to short, sharp (and usually funny) abridged performances of the same. However, the reduced performance in all its laborious and skilful distilla…

Managing Movement, Leading Change
This issue of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research represents another stage in the life of the journal. Max Bergman, who served as the journal’s coeditor with Donna Mertens from 2009 to the end of 2011, stepped down from that position. Mertens will continue in her term as coeditor through the end of 2013. She has been joined by Coeditor Dawn Freshwater of Leeds University. In this editorial, Freshwater provides us with a glimpse into her priorit…
Paradigms Lost and Paradigms Regained
Almost a year since my inaugaral editorial: Managing Movement, Leading Change (Freshwater, 2012) where I highlighted the importance of challenging philosophical and epistemological stances; we are taking the opportunity to do just that in relation to the elusive concept of ‘‘paradigm’’ through the highly versatile and dialogic form of the editorial. Conceptualizing the concept of paradigms as ‘‘elusive’’ is an important metaphor and one to which …
Art and Science in Health Care Research: Pushing at Open Doors or Locked in Institutions
Research methods are usually dictated and driven by the research question. In the context of research in "closed" systems-for example, offender health settings-it is imperative that the research question takes into consideration the context in which the research is located. Conducting research that has action, transformation, and creativity at its heart is a significant challenge in closed cultures, for both the researcher and the researched. Usi…
Reading Mixed Methods Research: Contexts for Criticism
Health and social care researchers, in their haste to ``belong'' to academia, have adopted the system of mixed methodology research, overestimating its ability to reveal the truth and occasionally imprisoning their thought in one system. In this article, some of the assumptions underpinning mixed methodology research and its discourse are subjected to an interrogative reading. Every reading is an act of criticism and every reader a critic. To rea…
