Parental Education Moderates the Relation between Physical Activity, Dietary Patterns and Atopic Diseases in Adolescents
Background: Atopic diseases, particularly asthma, eczema, and rhinitis, are among the most common chronic diseases in childhood, with several factors implicated in their pathogenesis. Our study examined the role of parental education in the association between diet, physical activity, and atopy in adolescents. Methods: 1934 adolescents (47.5% boys) aged 13−14 years old reported information about their diet and physical activity and their parents …
Clinical Course of Children with Chronic Suppurative Lung Disease or Bronchiectasis Infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Children with chronic wet cough and without cystic fibrosis (non-CF) may suffer from chronic suppurative lung disease (CSLD) or bronchiectasis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) can be one of the offending microbes in these children. The present study aimed to describe the clinical course of children with the above two conditions who were infected with Pa. Data of 54 children with CSLD/bronchiectasis who were diagnosed and attended in our department we…
Parental education moderates the association between indoor moisture environment and asthma in adolescents: The Greek Global Asthma Network (GAN) cross-sectional study
Adolescents whose parents had a higher education level had lesser odds to have asthma, even if they were exposed to a moisture home environment. This could be attributed to the increased knowledge about asthma risk factors and the improved measures for the amelioration of moisture-home environment that highly educated parents are more likely to take. Further research is needed in order to elucidate the interweaved role of family SES in the aforem…
Exploring the Relation between Atopic Diseases and Lifestyle Patterns among Adolescents Living in Greece: Evidence from the Greek Global Asthma Network (GAN) Cross-Sectional Study
A high weekly consumption of fruits, vegetables and pulses and low consumption of unhealthy foods was negatively associated with all atopic symptoms while adherence to a physical active lifestyle was inversely associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis symptoms and dairy products with asthma and eczema symptoms in the past 12 months after adjustment for several confounders (all p p < 0.05) Conclusions: Our findings suggest that a high fruit, ve…
Parental Education and the Association between Fruit and Vegetable Consumption and Asthma in Adolescents: The Greek Global Asthma Network (GAN) Study
Our findings highlight the importance of the adoption of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables for all asthmatic adolescents and emphasize the important role of parental influences in this association
Temporal changes in the prevalence of childhood asthma and allergies in urban and rural areas of Cyprus: Results from two cross sectional studies
The prevalence of allergic diseases in Cyprus is still on the rise; recent increases appear more pronounced among children living in rural areas possibly indicating recent environmental and lifestyle changes in these communities
Predictors of Childhood Exposure to Parental Secondhand Smoke in the House and Family Car
Childhood exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is a serious threat to public health and can be influenced by parental lifestyle habits and beliefs. Taking the above into account we aimed at locating predictors of parental induced exposure to SHS in the house and family car among 614 children who visited the emergency department of two large pediatric hospitals in Athens, Greece. The multivariate analysis revealed that the factors found to mediate h…
Aims, methods and preliminary findings of the Physical Activity, Nutrition and Allergies in Children Examined in Athens (Panacea) epidemiological study
The present cross-sectional study cannot establish causal relationships between asthma and increased body weight of schoolchildren; however, our findings underline the associations between asthma, increased body weight, and physical activity at population level, and urge for actions that should be taken by public health policy makers in order to prevent these conditions among children
