  • Trajectories of antibiotic prescriptions in Italian children in the first four years of life

Open Access•Isabella Rosato, Gloria Porcu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

From 2004 to 2022 in Italy, we observed heterogeneous antibiotic prescription patterns among children aged 0-4 years. Future strategies aimed at reducing the number of prescriptions in this age group should target the subgroups at higher risk

  • Exploring different modelling approaches to forecast the community acute respiratory infections burden in children

Open Access•Riccardo Boracchini, Benedetta Canova et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

These findings suggest that exponential smoothing models are preferable for forecasting pediatric ARIs' burden trends in Italy. However, epidemiological data from the ongoing season are crucial for understanding whether residual pandemic effects continue affecting respiratory infection patterns

  • Caregivers’ psychosocial assessment for identifying HIV-infected infants at risk of poor treatment adherence

Maria Grazia Lain, Sérgio Chicumbe et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2023

Psychosocial support (PSS) to caregivers of HIV-infected infants on antiretroviral treatment (ART) is crucial to ensure ART adherence and sustained long-term viral suppression in children. A specific approach including tools to monitor and understand adherence behavior and risk factors that prevent optimal treatment compliance are urgently needed. This qualitative exploratory study, conducted in southern Mozambique, monitored the infants' viral r…

  • Retrospective Analysis of the Real-World Use of Topical Antimicrobials in the Paediatric Population with Impetigo in Italy

Open Access•Elisa Barbieri, Sara Cavagnis et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Using electronic data from a large population-based network of Family Paediatricians (Pedianet), we aimed to describe the use of topical antimicrobials, including ozenoxacin 1% cream, in impetigo in children in Italy. We included 2929 children aged 6 months-14 years from 2016 to 2019 with at least one episode of impetigo treated with topical antimicrobials. Overall, 3051 cases of impetigo were included in the analysis. Treatment started in most c…

  • Perceived Psychological Impact on Children and Parents of Experiencing Covid-19 Infection in One or More Family Members

Open Access•Paola Costenaro, Costanza Di Chiara et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

SARS-CoV-2 infection may impair behavior and mental health; we explored the psychological impact on parents and children who experienced COVID-19 within their families. A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted on families attending the COVID-19 Follow-up Clinic at the Department for Women’s and Children’s Health, Padua (Italy). From April 2020 to August 2021, 75 surveys were collected from 66 families (97 parents and 129 children); almost…

  • A Retrospective Analysis to Estimate the Burden of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease and Non-Invasive Pneumonia in Children <15 Years of Age in the Veneto Region, Italy

Open Access•Elisa Barbieri, Gloria Porcu et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

Despite advances in preventative interventions, invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia cause significant morbidity and mortality in children. We studied the annual incidence of pneumococcal-specific and syndromic invasive disease and non-invasive pneumonia in children <15 years of age during the early (2010−2013) and late (2014−2017) 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) periods in Veneto, Italy. In this retrospective observationa…

  • A Retrospective Database Analysis to Estimate the Burden of Acute Otitis Media in Children Aged <15 Years in the Veneto Region (Italy)

Open Access•Elisa Barbieri, Gloria Porcu et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

This study aimed to assess trends in the incidence of acute otitis media (AOM), a common childhood condition, following the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) in the Veneto region of Italy in 2010. AOM episodes (overall, simple, and recurrent (≥3 or ≥4 episodes in 6 or 12 months, respectively, with ≥1 episode in the preceding 6 months)) in children <15 years of age were identified in Pedianet from 2010−2017. Inte…

  • The Economic Burden of Pneumococcal Disease in Children

Open Access•Elisa Barbieri, Gloria Porcu et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

Despite widespread childhood immunization programs, pneumococcal disease (PD) continues to be associated with significant clinical and economic burden worldwide. This retrospective study assessed the PD-related economic burden in children from the Veneto region of Italy following the introduction of a 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) to the Italian immunization schedule in 2010. Between 2010 and 2017, the annual incidences of pneu…

  • Use of Antibiotic Treatment in Pregnancy and the Risk of Several Neonatal Outcomes

Open Access•Anna Cantarutti, Federico Rea et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Our results suggested an increased risk of several neonatal outcomes in women exposed to ATs during pregnancy, albeit we were not able to assess to what extent the observed effects were due to the infection itself. To reduce the risk of neonatal outcomes, women that are prescribed AT during pregnancy should be closely monitored

  • Use of the Bacterial Lysate OM-85 in the Paediatric Population in Italy

Open Access•Anna Cantarutti, Elisa Barbieri et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

OM-85 is effective in preventing both antibiotic prescriptions and RTIs in children

  • Association of Treated and Untreated Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease in the First Year of Life with the Subsequent Development of Asthma

Open Access•Anna Cantarutti, Claudio Barbiellini Amidei et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Early-life GERD was associated with subsequent childhood asthma. Similar risks among children with treated and untreated GERD suggest that acid-suppressive medications are unlikely to play a major role in the development asthma

  • Warning of Immortal Time Bias When Studying Drug Safety in Pregnancy

Open Access•Giovanni Corrao, Federico Rea et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

This study aimed to illustrate and account for immortal time bias in pregnancy observational investigations, using the relationship between late use of antibiotics and risk of preterm birth as an example. We conducted a population-based cohort study including 549,082 deliveries between 2007 and 2017 in Lombardy, Italy. We evaluated the risk of preterm births, low birth weight, small for gestational age, and low Apgar score associated with antibio…

  • Use and Intentional Avoidance of Prescribed Medications in Pregnancy

Open Access•Angela Lupattelli, Marta Picinardi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Nation-wide information about medication use in pregnancy is lacking for Italy, and no study has so far investigated the prescribed medications which pregnant women deliberately avoid. In this study, we map medication use patterns in pregnancy, as well as the extent and type of prescribed medications which are purposely avoided by pregnant women in Italy. This is a sub-study within the "Multinational Medication Use in Pregnancy Study"-a cross-sec…

  • Association between Adherence with Recommended Antenatal Care in Low-Risk, Uncomplicated Pregnancy, and Maternal and Neonatal Adverse Outcomes

Open Access•Giovanni Corrao, Anna Cantarutti et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Antenatal care (ANC) aims of monitoring wellbeing of mother and foetus during pregnancy. We validate a set of indicators aimed of measuring the quality of ANC of women on low-risk, uncomplicated pregnancy through their relationship with maternal and neonatal outcomes. We conducted a population-based cohort study including 122,563 deliveries that occurred between 2015 and 2017 in the Lombardy Region, Italy. Promptness and appropriateness of number…
