The potential of non-representational theories in student voice research
This article explores the potential of using Non-representational theory (NRT) in higher education student voice research. NRT emerged from the work of human geographer Nigel Thrift in the 1990s [Thrift, 1996. Spatial formations. London: Sage]. NRT seeks to go beyond representation in social research focusing instead on the geographies of ‘what happens’. Building on previous work exploring the potential of NRT in educational research [e.g. Fendle…
Phenomenologies of 'social acceleration: Some Consequences and Opportunities for Education Studies in an Unknown Future
Social acceleration, the rapidly increasing speeding up of the pace of life, has been described and theorised by contemporary social theorists including Paul Virilio, Ben Agger, Thomas Hylland Eriksen and Hartmut Rosa. While these theorists use illustrations from education and others such as Foucault and Adam have considered the relationship between education and time, there has been little theorisation of dromology (a term Virilio coined to desc…
The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL): The Thorn in the Flesh of Educational Research
Thirty years ago Boyer’s report Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate (1990) inspired the launch of the ‘SoTL movement’ which sought to raise the status of learning and teaching in higher education. In this paper we argue that despite its honourable intentions the SoTL movement has been a thorn in the flesh of serious scholarship into learning and teaching in higher education. Drawing on various debates within and outside the …
The UK Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) as an illustration of Baudrillard's hyperreality
This article examines the ‘Teaching Excellence Framework’ (TEF) for UK universities through the lens of Jean Baudrillard’s concept of hyperreality. I argue that the TEF is a hyperreal simulacrum, a sign which has no traceable genealogy to the practice of learning and teaching

Imprisonment in the Medieval Religious Imagination, c.1150-1400
Cassidy-Welch considers imprisonment in a wide variety of medieval religious contexts. Her focus is mainly on French sources in the long thirteenth century. The book sets out the writer’s methodology in a clear and sophisticated way. Since medieval imprisonment involved confinement she is at pains to explain the location of her work within the now well-developed historical genre of studies of the function and nature of different forms of space. T…
Medieval Trinitarian Thought from Aquinas to Ockham, by Russell L. Friedman
This book is based on a series of lectures given at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris, in March and April 2008. It consists of a survey of the main arguments which scholastic theologians produced concerning the trinity in the period c.1250–c.1350. The author promises us for the future a lengthy monographic treatment of the subject: the summary has, as it were, come out first. The great merit of Friedman's book is that it gives a clear…
Disciplinary disjunctures in the transition from secondary school to higher education study of modern foreign languages: A case study from the UK
Discussions of student transition from the study of languages in UK high schools to the study of languages at university usually focus on the vertical transition, comparing the differences in curricula and approach to languages taken in each sector. Whilst acknowledging that this aspect of the student transition is important, this article explores the transition in a broader disciplinary context by raising questions about how other subjects stude…
Pain and Suffering in Medieval Theology: Academic Debates at the University of Paris in the Thirteenth Century, by Donald Mowbray
Pain and suffering were central concerns of medieval Christianity, not least because of the role of Christ's passion and death in the drama of the atonement. In this study, Donald Mowbray explores this key way into understanding medieval theology in great detail. His focus is a specific one: the works of masters of the University of Paris between c.1230 and c.1300. As he makes clear, he is concerned with speculative theology heavily influenced by…

"You've just been disarmed. Have a nice day!"
On September 23,2003, the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) hosted a meeting in Dahlgren, VA, to explore the arming of unmanned systems. We were interested in what it was going to take to produce armed, fully-autonomous, unmanned systems that could decide for themselves when to pull the trigger. We invited personnel from the Navy's Office of the Judge Advocate General (JAG), International Law Division, and the Office of the Secretary of De…
Influences on the Teaching of Arabic and Islamic Studies in UK Higher Education: Connections and disconnections
Middle Eastern Studies, modern foreign languages and Islamic Studies have been recognized by the UK government as strategically important subjects in higher education. Motivated by government concerns about lack of knowledge about the Middle East and the radicalization of British Muslims, this designation has complex implications for the teaching and learning of Arabic language and Islamic Studies. Factors influencing the teaching of these discip…
Ockham and Political Discourse in the Late Middle Ages
Takashi Shogimen's book is to be welcomed as the first monograph devoted to William of Ockham's contribution to political ideas since that of A.S. McGrade (The Political Thought of William of Ockham: Personal and Institutional Principles, 1974; rev. ante, xc [1975], 364–6). But this comparison highlights an underlying problem for interpreters of Ockham. McGrade's great book interpreted aspects of Ockham's ideas in terms relevant to political thou…

Placing Quebec nationalisms: Constructing English identities in Quebec's Eastern Townships
Most studies of nationalism in Quebec have tended to focus on national questions such as sovereignty, language laws and anglophone-francophone conflicts. The examination of national identities on an everyday level is neglected and minority and regional specificities are rarely considered. This article examines the construction of anglophone identities in the mainly rural Eastern Townships region of Quebec
