Wicked or tame issues? Dealing with knowledge crises in education policy
The Covid-19 pandemic triggered a severe break in school normality and problematised the knowledge-policy complex in education. By drawing on Actor-Network Theory and assemblage theory and an empirical investigation on the pandemic emergency in Italy, I will argue that the education crisis was interpreted as a tame question, not a wicked issue. Considering the crisis a tame question, the ‘old’ school normality was reproduced when the health emerg…
Ecological materialism
In the latest two decades, there has been an increasing number of publications in education studies drawing on Actor-Network Theory (ANT). However, the uptake of ANT in education studies was not immediate, and the investigations on educational leadership through ANT have been rare. With the aim of promoting the study of educational leadership through ANT, this article shows that ANT is a vocabulary to counter modernistic thinking in education and…
Pandemic Acceleration
With schools and universities closing across Europe, the Covid-19 lockdown left actors in the field of education battling with the unprecedented challenge of finding a meaningful way to keep the wheels of education turning online. The sudden need for digital solutions across the field of education resulted in the emergence of a variety of digital networks and collaborative online platforms. In this joint article from scholars around Europe, we ex…
The big acceleration in digital education in Italy
This article deals with the COVID-19 pandemic as a point of acceleration for the emergence of a distinctive and yet unstable problematization of the 20th-century school form. Focusing on the Italian public and policy debate on education and adopting an archaeological analytics, it explores what ‘other’ coordinates for the forms of schooling are emerging through the encounters, clashes and co-options between different epistemological standpoints. …

Inventing other spaces for European education
This editorial introduces the European Educational Research Journal special issue that hosts four articles co-authored by emerging researchers in the field of educational research in Europe who participated in the Summer School in European Education Studies. We present the Summer School in European Education Studies project, its history and approach, and its ambition to establish a laboratory for inventing ‘other spaces’ for educational research …
Governing by visual shapes
University rankings have become commonplace in higher education. Traditional quantified rankings do not merely measure educational performance: they equally grant status, enforce competition between institutions, and are emblematic for the ongoing capitalization of higher education. Drawing on the field of Science and Technology Studies, this article undertakes an up-close, critical analysis of one ranking platform: U-Multirank. Explicitly recogn…
Network time for the European Higher Education Area
In this article, we discuss the process of standardization of Higher education (HE) initiated by the Bologna Process bringing to the forefront the temporal politics of the standardization of European Higher Education Arena (EHEA). Empirically, we perform a comparative review of the Scorecards indicators at the base of the Bologna Process monitoring project. We argue that the fabrication of EHEA could be seen as the installation of new time-space …
Tackling early school leaving and the governing of educational transitions in Italy
This article presents a critical policy historiography of how Early School Leaving has been understood as a social problem and what policy responses have been enacted to tackle it in the Italian context, devoting a specific attention to the analysis of the translation of EU policy ideas, tools and recipes to reduce ESL. It shows how the formulation of a global and integrated national strategy to tackle ESL in Italy in 2018 can be interpreted as t…

The sociomateriality of education policy
By drawing on sociomaterial approaches to education, this paper presents a case study on the creation, development and consolidation of the education zone, a new policy space in South Italy. The topological reading of the case study reveals the complex reassemblage of humans and non-humans in the enactment of the education zones, and its multiple enactments as regions, networks and fluids
“I Sign, Therefore I am” (Un)stable Traces of Professional Practices
Signatures will be read as (un)stable traces of professional knowledges, practices, and identities. The paper intends to propose a theoretical framework to explore the sociomateriality of signature in occupational and professional practices. This exploration will be conducted by assuming a practice-based approach to “signing in practice” and therefore by paying attention to knowing as a situated practice within organizations. The aim of the paper…
Governing by Standards
This article reflects on the fabrication of austerity in the Italian education system during the recent financial crisis and the resulting economic stagnation in the economic outlook. In particular, it describes the construction and emerging configuration of a mode of educational governance where standards, data analysis and performances play a growing and relevant role. By drawing on recent literature on a sociology of educational policy and pra…
Mobilising ethnographers investigating technologised learning
This paper intends to problematise understandings of the ethnographer's presence in investigating contemporary forms of technologised learning. The ubiquity of new educational technologies raises questions concerning the spaces of education and learning, and challenges, at the same time, the sense of ‘being there’ in terms of the face-to-face interactions fundamental in ‘standard’ descriptions of educational ethnography. This paper – drawing theo…
Materialities, textures and pedagogies
Research in learning and pedagogy has for some time been turning away from preoccupation with individual learners, teachers or minds to embrace the situatedness of these processes and their many in...
The Pragmatics of Passion
This paper addresses the question of the intertwining of practice and passion in scientific work, considering passion as a collective attachment to the subjects and objects of knowledge in an epistemic community. The paper draws on a research program on Renato Caccioppoli (1904—59), the famous Italian mathematician, and the group of mathematicians he used to work with, showing the use of sociology of attachment in the description of the link betw…
