Failure-Related State Orientation and Self-Esteem Change in Inpatient Addiction Treatment for Illicit Drug Addiction
Previous research suggests that addiction to illegal drugs is associated with low self-esteem. State orientation has likewise been identified as a potential risk factor for diminished self-esteem. Inpatient addiction treatment aims to improve coping with self-esteem-threatening influences. We therefore hypothesized that AOF would be associated with lower self-esteem and that self-esteem would increase over the course of treatment. In a 24-week Ge…
Artificial Intelligence in Medical Care – Patients' Perceptions on Caregiving Relationships and Ethics
INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) offers several opportunities to enhance medical care, but practical application is limited. Consideration of patient needs is essential for the successful implementation of AI-based systems. Few studies have explored patients' perceptions, especially in Germany, resulting in insufficient exploration of perspectives of outpatients, older patients and patients with chronic diseases. We aimed to explore how…
Social participation and cognitive activities as explanation factor for the association between income and self-rated health for older adults
Introduction: Health disparities pose a considerable challenge for older adults individuals, particularly those with a heightened risk of developing dementia. Discrepancies in health status among various income brackets are only partially attributable to structural factors such as working and living conditions or the quality of food. The aim of this study was therefore to explore whether and to what extent various health-promoting behaviors can e…

Covid-19 government measures and their impact on mental health
Background With the outbreak of COVID-19, government measures including social distancing and restrictions of social contacts were imposed to slow the spread of the virus. Since older adults are at increased risk of severe disease, they were particularly affected by these restrictions. These may negatively affect mental health by loneliness and social isolation, which constitute risk factors for depressiveness. We aimed to analyse the impact of p…
Anxiety, depressive symptoms, and distress over the course of the war in Ukraine in three federal states in Germany
The Russian invasion of Ukraine is accompanied by continuing impairment of mental health in the German population. Fears surrounding the personal financial situation are a strong determinant
Efficacy of Three Numerical Presentation Formats on Lay People’s Comprehension and Risk Perception of Fact Boxes—A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study
(1) Background: Fact boxes present the benefits and harms of medical interventions in the form of tables. Some studies suggest that people with a lower level of education could profit more from graphic presentations. The objective of the study was to compare three different formats in fact boxes with regard to verbatim and gist knowledge in general and according to the educational background. (2) Methods: In May 2020, recruitment started for this…
Depression and Anxiety in Old Age during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Our study aims to examine the associations of sociodemographic factors, social support, resilience, and perceptions of the COVID-19 pandemic with late-life depression and anxiety symptoms in a cardiovascular risk group and a matched sample from the German general population during the beginning of the pandemic and draw a comparison regarding psychosocial characteristics. Data of n = 1236 participants (aged 64-81 years) were analyzed, with n = 618…
Public information needs and preferences on Covid-19
There are extensive information needs regarding various aspects on COVID-19 among the general population. In addition, target-specific dissemination strategies are still needed to reach different groups
Prevalence and risk factors for tobacco, khat, and alcohol consumption among high school students in Ethiopia
Substance use prevalence in Ethiopia has regional variations and prevention strategies should be tailored to the needs of the regions. Although this study reported a lower prevalence of cigarette smoking, students could access cigarettes and khat in nearby school areas. The existing tobacco control laws that prohibit selling tobacco products to children and adolescents under 21 years of age and ban establishing tobacco shops close to school compo…
Physical Activity Determinants in Older German Adults at Increased Dementia Risk with Multimorbidity
Background: Multimorbidity is a common issue in aging societies and is usually associated with dementia in older people. Physical activity (PA) may be a beneficial nonpharmacological strategy for patients with complex health needs. However, insufficient PA is predominant in this population. Thus, there is an evident need to expand the knowledge on potential determinants influencing PA engagement among elderly persons at risk of dementia and multi…
Medical students’ adoption and evaluation of a completely digital general practice clerkship – cross-sectional survey and cohort comparison with face-to-face teaching
Students welcomed the digital content and perceived relevant learning gain. Our results may help to develop future blended learning concepts. Clinical cases, examination videos and visual diagnoses appear to be particularly suitable as useful online complements which could enrich face-to-face teaching. As students especially valued the exclusive time for exchanges with their preceptor, this should be facilitated in face-to-face clerkships
An Emerging Problem of Shisha Smoking among High School Students in Ethiopia
Shisha smoking is also known as hookah, water pipe, goza, and nargile. Shisha use among the young is increasing globally. Shisha smoke results in a high concentration of carbon monoxide, tar, nicotine, and heavy metals which can be toxic to humans, especially with chronic exposure. This study aims to determine the prevalence and risk factors of shisha smoking among in-school adolescents in Ethiopia. Four regional states in Ethiopia (Oromia, Amhar…
Recruitment and Baseline Characteristics of Participants in the AgeWell.de Study—A Pragmatic Cluster-Randomized Controlled Lifestyle Trial against Cognitive Decline
Targeting dementia prevention, first trials addressing multiple modifiable risk factors showed promising results in at-risk populations. In Germany, AgeWell.de is the first large-scale initiative investigating the effectiveness of a multi-component lifestyle intervention against cognitive decline. We aimed to investigate the recruitment process and baseline characteristics of the AgeWell.de participants to gain an understanding of the at-risk pop…
