Critical Mass: Social Documentary in France From the Silent Era to The New Wave
Stephen Ungar’s Critical Mass is a powerful, wide-ranging and highly readable contribution to the history of documentary in France and of social documentary in a broader transnational perspective. Its central aim is to trace the ambitions of post-war French social documentaries to their origins in late silent era films at the intersection of avant-garde cinema, left-wing politics and documentary practice. Blending close analysis of individual fil…
Animal products: Livestock farming and ecological citizenship in French political documentary
In the past 15 years, French cinema has seen a significant uptick in documentary films devoted to the issue of industrialized agriculture. These films join a large international corpus of documentaries that critique agricultural threats to human health, animal welfare, and the environment. This article analyses four recent political films on French livestock production that critique industrialized agricultural practices. Three are solutions-orien…
Film, propaganda, and politics: La France est un empire , 1939-1943
This article tells the story of a colonial documentary film that spanned the years of the late Third Republic and Vichy. The film is La France est un empire, written and directed by the adventure novelist Jean d’Agraives. The article is based on an unusually complete dossier of archival information, pieced together from both film and manuscript archives, that allows us to trace the life of the film from the initial idea to the production and ulti…
Words on trial: Oral performance in Abderrahamane Sissako's Bamako
This article focuses on orality and performance in Sissako's work, with particular attention to Bamako (2006). I analyse the numerous monologues in the film, both scripted and unscripted, in relation to the film's overall narrative structure, which is multi-layered, digressive and occasionally circular. Drawing on theoretical works by scholars such as Melissa Thackway, Ruth Finnegan and Manthia Diawara, I argue that this formal experimentation wi…

Citroën and Tourism in the Sahara (1924-1925). CEGETAF/CITRACIT(1924-1925) was an ambitions project initiated by André Citroën to establish a regular automobile service between French North Africa and French West Africa and at the same time to attract high-end tourism to the colonies. The project was a total failure ; the hotels that Citroën built in the middle of the desert were sold offto the army before they were ever used, and Citroën himself…
