Exploring the stigma of suicide in Malaysia
Suicide-related stigma pervades both healthcare systems and communities, affecting individuals and their social circles. This study aimed to explore lived experience perspectives on the public stigma of suicide in Malaysia using community-based participatory research (CBPR). Nineteen individuals with a history of suicide ideation and/or suicide attempt attended 90-minute virtual focus groups conducted in 2022. Thematic analysis revealed 19 stereo…
Toward a memory perspective on eating psychopathology
The cognitive mechanisms through which specific life events affect the development and maintenance of eating disorders (ED) have received limited attention in the scientific literature. The present research aims to address this gap by adopting a memory perspective to explore the type of life events associated with eating psychopathology and how these events are encoded and reconstructed as memories. Two studies (n = 208 and n = 193) were conducte…
Just Tell Me What to Do
This article examines the impact of support and goal instrumentality on relationship quality. Goal instrumentality is a means by which people can outsource their self-regulatory efforts to close others, allowing close others to facilitate their goal progress. Two studies investigated the consequences of autonomous, directive, and controlling goal support from instrumental others on relationship quality. In Study 1, participants were asked to thin…
Beyond the self in self-control
The purpose of this research was to examine the role of self-construal on goal instrumentality in close friendships. Participants (105 female friend dyads, N = 210) were asked to set personal academic goals and were followed up over the course of a semester. Using the actor-partner interdependence model, results revealed that those with a high relational self-construal were more likely to perceive their friends to be instrumental to their goals. …
Vicarious goal satiation
For God (or) country
It has been recently proposed that people can flexibly rely on sources of control that are both internal and external to the self to satisfy the need to believe that their world is under control (i.e., that events do not unfold randomly or haphazardly). Consistent with this, past research demonstrates that, when personal control is threatened, people defend external systems of control, such as God and government. This theoretical perspective also…
The relations of parental autonomy support to cultural internalization and well-being of immigrants and sojourners
Previous research has demonstrated that autonomy support is one particularly effective means of promoting internalization and fostering well-being. The present study sought to determine if this would also be the case with regards to culture by testing the relation of perceived parental autonomy support to the cultural internalization and well-being of multicultural students. In Study 1, 105 multicultural participants living in Canada were more li…
