  • Large Obsidian Bifaces from a Middle Horizon Ritual Offering in the South-Central Coast of Peru: Provenance and Technology

Open Access•Francesca Fernandini Parodi, Antonio Pérez Balarezo et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2026

This report presents the provenance and technological analysis of two large obsidian bifaces recovered from a Middle Horizon (ca. AD 600–1000) ritual abandonment context at the coastal site of Cerro de Oro in the Cañete Valley, Peru. Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analysis identifies Quispisisa as the obsidian source, thereby documenting its circulation beyond highland Wari contexts. Technological analysis indicates contrasting trajectories: …

  • Quartz Crystal Fishtail Projectile Point and Paiján Technology from the Pampa Lechuza Site, South-Central Coastal Desert of Peru

Antonio Pérez Balarezo, Jalh Dulanto et al.•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2025

Fishtail projectile points, found from Central America to southern South America during the Late Pleistocene, are typically flint-based but occasionally crafted from quartz. This work examines quartz crystal specimens from Peru’s Pampa Lechuza site (Ica Valley), dated to the Late Pleistocene–Early Holocene, including Fishtail and Paiján Points. The co-occurrence of these technologies in south-central Peru suggests a more intricate scenario of And…

Although the Hoabinhian culture is renowned for its unifacial pebble tools and its discovery dates back more than a century, only a handful of sites provide complete information on this period. The site of Laang Spean, in Cambodia, has recently been described as a burial cave for the Neolithic period, but it was previously known as an emblematic Hoabinhian site for Cambodia. More comprehensive studies indicate that it offers a wide window onto th…

These artifacts, found in central and northeastern Brazil from the late Pleistocene to the early Holocene, are associated with the Itaparica technocomplex. We present evidenc…
