  • From disillusionment to devotion

Open Access•Haiyang Lu, Kazuhiro Ishida et al.•ARTICLE•International Sociology•2026

While interest in the determinants of religiosity has grown, few studies have explored the role of social mobility in shaping religious beliefs. This study examines the relationship between perceptions of upward and downward social mobility (PUSM/PDSM) and religiosity in China using a diagonal reference model. Drawing on the Chinese Social Survey, we found no significant relationship between PUSM and religious beliefs, whereas PDSM was positively…

  • Transnational career advantages

    Open Access•Kazuhiro Ishida, Kenji Ishida•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2026•References: 19

These findings reveal that transnational careers economically benefit Japanese middle-class workers, challenging conventional views of upward mobility occurring primarily within domestic labor markets. Despite theoretical and empirical issues to be addressed in the future studies, the research contributes to understanding middle-class migration from high-income countries within Asia's rapidly growing economic centers, suggesting that internationa…

Open Access•Kazuhiro Ishida, Kenji Ishida et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2025•References: 48

School achievement of immigrant-origin youths is affected by multiple factors, yet their performance relative to native peers remains debated in migration studies. Furthermore, considerable variation within the second-generation children possibly exists. This study investigates whether Japan-born children with migrant parents lag behind in high school educational attainment compared to their Japanese peers, advancing research on second-generation…

  • An Argument Attributed to Pāścātyas in the Nyāyānusāriṇī

    Open Access•Kazuhiro Ishida•ARTICLE•印度學佛教學研究•2024

Six theories attributed to the so-called Sarvāstivādins of the Western Region 西方諸師 are found in the Nyāyānusāriṇī (NA, 順正理論, T. 1562). This article examines one of them, in which the supernormal knowledge of the past lifetimes of oneself and others (pūrvanivāsānusmṛtyabhijñā) is debated. The seventh chapter of the NA, analyzing the six supernormal knowledges, examines the relation between supernormal knowledge of the past lifetimes of oneself and…

  • The Realm of Ghosts 鬼界 in the Dharmaskandha

    Open Access•Kazuhiro Ishida•ARTICLE•印度學佛教學研究•2023

The three evil destinies are elements of the overall scheme of the five destinies. The world in Abhidharma literature is described by them and by the three realms, but their origin is unclear. This paper examines the earliest passage about the three evil destinies in the Dharmaskandha. As a result, the following four points were identified. First, the earliest reference to the three evil destinies in the Dharmaskandha is identified in a citation …

  • Tiryañc in the * Abhidharma Mahāvibhāṣa

    Open Access•Kazuhiro Ishida•ARTICLE•印度學佛教學研究•2022

Concerning the definition of tiryañc in the Abhidharma, the first mention is in the Saṅgītiparyāya集異門足論. This includes the definition of tiryañc inherited in subsequent treatises in the Sarvāstivāda. However, a comparison of definitions of tiryañc in the *Abhidharma Mahāvibhāṣa 阿毘達磨大毘婆沙論 and the *Abhidharmavibhāṣā 阿毘曇毘婆沙論 reveal some differences. Considering these differences, the definition of tiryañc in the Saṅgītiparyāya may have been introduc…

  • The Dynamics of Immigration and Anti-Immigrant Sentiment in Japan

    Open Access•James Laurence, A Igarashi et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2022

Extensive research investigates how immigration shapes natives’ anti-immigrant sentiment. However, several areas require further scrutiny. This paper explores how processes of immigration affect anti-immigrant sentiment in a new immigration destination country—Japan—drawing on longitudinal data to examine these processes over time and explicitly testing the mechanisms of perceived threat and intergroup contact posited to underpin this relationshi…

  • Social media infodemics and social distancing under the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Susumu Cato, Takashi Iida et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2021

This debate examines the impact of infodemics - an over-abundance of information - on social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of its external effects, social distancing behavior (SDB) shares fundamental properties with public goods, whose potential for undersupply has been examined extensively in the social sciences. Although the negative effects of infodemics have been emphasized by governments and international organizations, th…

  • The Six Cultivations Among the So-Called Sarvāstivādins of the Western Region

    Open Access•Kazuhiro Ishida•ARTICLE•印度學佛教學研究•2020

In this paper, among the six cultivations spoken of by the so-called Sarvāstivādins of the Western Region (西方諸師), I examine the background of saṁvarabhāvanā. Generally speaking, there are four cultivations for the Sarvāstivādins. Notably, however, scholars of the Sarvāstivādins of the Western Region argued that there are six cultivations. As a result, it is clear that they made their theory based on some sūtras in the Six Senses (ṣaḍāyatana) chap…

  • Negative Assimilation

    Open Access•Ayumi Takenaka, Makiko Nakamuro et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2016•Cited by: 9•References: 29

This paper examines the economic mobility of foreign migrants in Japan. In a country that is largely regarded as homogeneous and closed to outsiders, how and to what extent do immigrants achieve economic success? A survey conducted by the authors revealed that the conventional assimilationist perspective does not fully explain immigrants’ economic success in Japan. Migrants from the West experience what Chiswick and Miller (2011) refer to as “neg…
