  • Pathways to gender‐transformative women's health aid: Comparative evidence from five donors

Open Access•Yoorim Bang, Eunhee Ha et al.•ARTICLE•Development Policy Review•2026

Motivation Gender equality and women's health remain priorities, yet recent fiscal retrenchment and shifting geopolitical agendas have narrowed the space for gender‐transformative programming. Despite growing donor endorsement of gender‐transformative approaches, substantial gaps persist between rhetorical commitment and operational practice, particularly in women's health ODA. This raises a critical policy question: under constrained resources, …

  • Association between early childhood infections and adolescent chronic diseases: A nationwide cohort analysis

Open Access•Jongmin Oh, Ji Hyen Lee et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

In this nationwide cohort, early childhood respiratory and gastrointestinal infections were consistently associated with chronic conditions such as allergic rhinitis, bronchitis, and gastroenteritis and colitis in adolescents. These findings suggest potential early-life origins of chronic disease and highlight the need for targeted prevention strategies to reduce the long-term burden of chronic illnesses in children

  • Is air pollution a risk factor for early menopause

Open Access•Joyce Kim, Joyce Mary Kim et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Our findings suggest that exposure to ambient air pollution may contribute to the onset of menopause, emphasizing the importance of addressing air quality as a public health priority. This study highlights the need for further research to explore the underlying mechanisms and long-term health impacts of environmental factors associated with early menopause

  • Infantile allergic diseases: A cohort study prenatal fish intake and mercury exposure context

Open Access•Surabhi Shah, Hae Soon Kim et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The result indicates that prenatal white fish intake at least once a week reduces the risk of ADs in infants, especially in the group with high prenatal mercury exposure

  • Summer temperature and emergency room visits due to urinary tract infection in South Korea: A national time-stratified case-crossover study

Open Access•Jiwoo Park, Whanhee Lee et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

  • Causal relationship between particulate matter 2.5 and diabetes: Two sample Mendelian randomization

Open Access•Joyce Kim, Joyce Mary Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Backgrounds Many studies have shown particulate matter has emerged as one of the major environmental risk factors for diabetes; however, studies on the causal relationship between particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5 ) and diabetes based on genetic approaches are scarce. The study estimated the causal relationship between diabetes and PM 2.5 using two sample mendelian randomization (TSMR). Methods We collected genetic data from European ancestry public…

  • Prenatal Exposure to Traffic-Related Air Pollution and the DNA Methylation in Cord Blood Cells: Moceh Study

Open Access•Jaehyun Park, Woo Jin Kim et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Particulate matter with a diameter of ≤10 μm (PM 10 ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) affect the DNA methylation in the fetus, but epigenetic studies regarding prenatal exposure to air pollution in Asia are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether there is any association between the ambient concentrations of PM 10 and NO 2 and CpG methylation in the cord blood DNA by using a Korean birth cohort. The concentrations of the air pollutant…

  • The Combined Effects of Fine Particulate Matter and Temperature on Preterm Birth in Seoul, 2010–2016

Open Access•Youngrin Kwag, Min Ho Kim et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Background: Preterm birth contributes to the morbidity and mortality of newborns and infants. Recent studies have shown that maternal exposure to particulate matter and extreme temperatures results in immune dysfunction, which can induce preterm birth. This study aimed to evaluate the association between fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) exposure, temperature, and preterm birth in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Methods: We used 2010-2016 birth data fr…

  • Effect of Short-Term Exposure to Fine Particulate Matter and Temperature on Acute Myocardial Infarction in Korea

Open Access•Jiyoung Shin, Jongmin Oh et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

In conclusion, acute exposure to PM2.5 was significantly associated with AMI morbidity at lag 0 in Seoul, Korea. This increased risk was also observed at low temperatures

  • Is Short-Term Exposure to PM2.5 Relevant to Childhood Kawasaki Disease

Open Access•Jongmin Oh, Ji Hyen Lee et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Background: Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute febrile vascular disease of unknown cause that affects the whole body. KD typically occurs in infants under the age of five and is found mainly in East Asian countries. Few studies have reported on the relationship between the pollutant PM 2.5 and KD, and the evidence remains irrelevant or insufficient. Objectives: We investigated the relationship between short-term exposure to PM 2.5 and KD hospitali…

  • Direct and Indirect Effects of Indoor Particulate Matter on Blood Indicators Related to Anemia

Open Access•Youngrin Kwag, Shinhee Ye et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Exposure to indoor particulate matter (PM) is a potential risk factor that increases systemic inflammation and affects erythropoiesis. This study investigated the association between exposure to indoor PM and blood indicators related to anemia (BIRA) in housewives. Indoor PM and blood folate status are important factors in the risk of anemia. This was a housewife cohort study; we recruited 284 housewives in Seoul and Ulsan, Republic of Korea. Ind…
