  • Parenting Style and Their Influence on Children’s Dental Health in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Open Access•Areej Alsiwat, George Kitsaras et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2026

Background: Families, including mothers and fathers, create a safe, stable environment if they work together in setting rules for their children. Research on parenting style among Saudi Arabian parents in Riyadh is lacking. Analyzing and assessing these factors will facilitate the formulation of evidence-based methods to enhance parenting practices, which is the main aim of this study. Methodology: This cross-sectional study conducted in Riyadh, …

  • Barriers and facilitators to achieving optimal oral health behaviours in university students

Open Access•Tanzeelah Azam, Michaela Goodwin et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

The outcome of this qualitative study provided valuable information regarding the barriers and facilitators to achieving optimal oral health behaviours in young adults at university. This facilitated the identification and recognition of areas necessitating further support for this population and pinpointed the required areas for change. By utilising the TDF and BCW, tailored interventions can be designed to address oral health behaviours. The ga…

  • The relationship of dental caries and weight status with adherence to school nutrition policies among public primary school children in Riyadh

Open Access•Areej Alsiwat, George Kitsaras et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

There was no evidence of a difference between the level of adherence to Ministry of Education school canteen guidelines in public primary schools and dental caries experience or weight status of students. However, due to the level of school canteen compliance being either 'poor' or 'average', a clear conclusion cannot be reached

  • Perceived Barriers and Facilitators for Bedtime Routines in Families with Young Children

Open Access•George Kitsaras, Michaela Goodwin et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

Several theory-based, and potentially modifiable, determinants of optimal bedtime routines were identified in this study, providing important information for future interventions. Several of the key determinants identified were transient (tiredness) and/or non-conscious (habit), suggesting that future interventions may need to be deployed in real time, and should extend beyond conventional techniques

  • Bedtime Oral Hygiene Behaviours, Dietary Habits and Children’s Dental Health

Open Access•George Kitsaras, Michaela Goodwin et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

Background: Oral hygiene behaviours as well as dietary habits before bed can affect children's dental health resulting in higher prevalence of dental disease. Dental disease can affect children's health, development and even school performance. If left untreated, dental disease can progress and it can lead to extractions under general anaesthetic causing further distress for children and families. Consistent and appropriate oral hygiene behaviour…

  • Bedtime Routine Characteristics and Activities in Families with Young Children in the North of England

Open Access•George Kitsaras, Michaela Goodwin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Bedtime routines have been shown to have significant associations with health, wellbeing and development outcomes for children and parents. Despite the importance of bedtime routines, most research has been carried out in the United States, with little information on bedtime routine characteristics and activities for families in other countries such as the United Kingdom and England in particular. Additionally, little is known about the possible …

  • Bedtime routines child wellbeing & development

Open Access•George Kitsaras, Michaela Goodwin et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

The results of the present study highlight the potentially important role of bedtime routines in a variety of areas associated with child wellbeing and the need for further research

  • The association between social deprivation and the prevalence and severity of dental caries and fluorosis in populations with and without water fluoridation

    Open Access•Michael G McGrady, Roger P Ellwood et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Water fluoridation appears to reduce the social class gradient between deprivation and caries experience when considering caries into dentine. However, this was associated with an increased risk of developing mild fluorosis. The use of intra-oral cameras and remote scoring of photographs for caries demonstrated good potential for blinded scoring

  • Quantitative Light Fluorescence (QLF) and Polarized White Light (PWL) assessments of dental fluorosis in an epidemiological setting

Open Access•Iain Pretty, Iain A Pretty et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

The study suggests that the use of a digital imaging system to capture images for either automated software analysis, or remote assessment by raters is suitable for epidemiological work. The use of recorded images enables study archiving, assessment by multiple examiners, remote assessment and objectivity due to the blinding of subject status
