Cognitive impairment at older ages among 8000 men and women living in Mexico City
In this population of adults aged 50-89 years from Mexico City, the prevalence of cognitive impairment was high, particularly among women. The extent to which cognitive impairment relates to health outcomes in this population needs to be investigated
Associations of fruit intake with adiposity and cardiometabolic biomarkers in UK Biobank
We observed very small differences in adiposity and cardiometabolic biomarkers between those who reported high fruit consumption vs low, most of which did not persist over follow-up. Future studies on other mechanisms and detailed assessment of confounding might further elucidate the relevance of fruit to cardiovascular disease
Body-mass index, blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular mortality in Cuba
This large prospective study provides direct evidence for the effects of these major risk factors on cardiovascular mortality in Cuba. Despite comparatively low levels of these risk factors by international standards, the strength of their association with cardiovascular death means they nevertheless exert a substantial impact on premature mortality in Cuba
RoB 2
Assessment of risk of bias is regarded as an essential component of a systematic review on the effects of an intervention. The most commonly used tool for randomised trials is the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. We updated the tool to respond to developments in understanding how bias arises in randomised trials, and to address user feedback on and limitations of the original tool.
Blood pressure lowering for prevention of cardiovascular disease and death
P2-26 Smoking and mortality in old age
Introduction We sought to assess the strength of associations of smoking with cause-specific mortality in older men. Methods In a prospective study of surviving participants of the Whitehall study of male civil servants recruited in 1967–1970, 7044 were resurveyed in 1997-1998 (mean age 77 years; range 66–97) and followed for cause-specific mortality. HRs in relation to smoking habits in old age were estimated using Cox proportional hazards model…
The prevalence of chronic diseases and major disease risk factors at different ages among 150 000 men and women living in Mexico City
Diabetes, obesity and tobacco smoking are highly prevalent among adults living in Mexico City. Long-term follow-up of this and other cohorts will establish the relevance of such factors to the major causes of death and disability in Mexico
Alcohol consumption and the U-shape relationship with mortality
Objectives: To investigate the impact of medication on 20-year trends in BP and blood lipids in older British men. Design: Longitudinal study. Setting: 24 British towns. Participants: 4231 men from a socially and geographically representative cohort of older British men, examined at baseline (1978-80, aged 40-59 years) and after 20 years (1998)(1999)(2000). Main Outcome Measures: 20-year trends in systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pr…
