  • Spatiotemporal modeling of regional short-term pertussis transmission risk using a propagation-enhanced prediction framework

Open Access•Siheng Zhang, Yao Zhu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Introduction: Accurate forecasting of regional pertussis transmission is essential for public health surveillance, yet remains challenging because of complex spatial heterogeneity, implicit cross-city diffusion pathways, and nonlinear temporal dynamics. Methods: A spatiotemporal risk prediction framework was developed to model fine-grained disease spread across cities. The framework combines three-dimensional convolutional embeddings for local sp…

  • Surveillance and analysis of adverse events following immunization (Aefi) with measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine in Zhejiang Province, China, 2020–2025

Open Access•Xuejiao Pan, Yaping Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background: The Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine is a cornerstone of global pediatric health, yet its uptake has been declining amid growing public sensitivity about vaccine safety. This study aimed to analyze the occurrence of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) following MMR administration in Zhejiang Province from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2025, to evaluate the vaccine's post-marketing safety profile. Methods: AEFI cas…

  • Factors associated with serious adverse event following immunization

Open Access•Xuejiao Pan, Yaping Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background and aims: While vaccination is a vital and cost-effective public health tool, a small fraction of recipients experience serious adverse events (SAEs) that impose a profound clinical and systemic burden. Identifying the specific factors that predispose an individual to an SAE remains complex due to limitations in existing literature. This study analyzes SAE following immunization in the US population and identifies associated factors. M…

  • Clinical characteristics and mortality risk factors among hospitalized infants and children with pertussis in China

Open Access•S Zheng, Feng Luo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background The resurgence of pertussis has emerged as a significant global public health threat. Severe pertussis primarily affects infants and children and is often associated with serious complications or death. Methods We retrospectively evaluated the clinical data of 197 hospitalized children with pertussis admitted to Children’s Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, from 2019 to 2024. Patients were categorized into severe and mil…

  • Pertussis resurgence and epidemiology of fully vaccinated cases in eastern China

Open Access•Kai Gao, Yao Zhu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Objectives: This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the epidemiology of pertussis based on case characteristics and vaccination history in Zhejiang Province. Methods: We analyzed clinically diagnosed and laboratory-confirmed pertussis cases (aged 0-18 years old) reported in Zhejiang Province from January 2016 to December 2024. Vaccination history data were matched from the Zhejiang Provincial Immunization Information System. Results: A total …

  • Analysis of a super-transmission of Sars-CoV-2 omicron variant BA.5.2 in the outdoor night market

Open Access•Mingyu Luo, Shelan Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic continues to ravage the world, and mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 continues. The new strain has become more transmissible. The role of aerosol transmission in the pandemic deserves great attention. Methods: In this observational study, we collected data from market customers and stallholders who had been exposed to the virus in the Qingkou night market on July 31 and were subsequently infected. We analyzed the pos…

  • Health seeking behavior and associated factors among individuals with cough in Yiwu, China

Open Access•Xiaoyan Sun, Shuying Luo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

The present study found that age, sex, living areas and features of cough were associated with health seeking behavior. It is worth noting that those who coughed for too long (e.g. > 8 weeks) were less likely to seek medical treatment. Targeted measures should be developed based on the key factors found in this study to guide persons to seek medical treatment more scientifically

  • Early Waning of Maternal Measles Antibodies in Infants in Zhejiang Province, China

Open Access•Ka Chun Chong, Rui Yan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

In China, children aged <8 months, who were expected to be protected by maternal antibodies before receiving the first dose of measles vaccine, were the age group with the greatest risk of infection in recent years. In this study, we evaluated whether infants yet to be age-eligible for measles vaccine had a sufficient seropositive level of maternal measles antibodies in 2009 and 2013. Blood samples were collected from infants aged <8 months throu…
