Exploring Reflections on the Interviewing Process of Intimate Partner Violence inMongolia
The widespread occurrence of violence against women takes place across diverse backgrounds, highlighting the importance of research on the survivors’ experiences. However, a notable gap exists between this research and the analysis of the survivors’ reflections made during these research interviews. Similarly, this research gap is visible in Mongolia, where the prevalence of intimate partner violence affects one in every three women. This qualita…
Structural Deprivation, Rural Segregation, and Substance Use—A Hungarian Case Study
New designer drugs are a major public health concern, particularly in disadvantaged, segregated communities. While the phenomenon is better understood in urban settings, it remains unexplored in rural areas. This gap explains our research rationale: an interdisciplinary survey was designed; the fieldwork took place in Hungary, in a segregated rural area ( n = 425), in 2022. The complex sociological-psychological-existential trap represented by ru…

Therapy aimed at bolstering self-control, supporting the integration of the fragmented self, and raising awareness of the connections between delusional reality and standard, intersubjective reality may be helpful in reducing the instability of the self. Therapy aimed at processing complex grief and loss of family is also needed
Identifying Types of Eco-Anxiety, Eco-Guilt, Eco-Grief, and Eco-Coping in a Climate-Sensitive Population
The interviews revealed six eco-anxiety components, eight types of eco-guilt, and two types of eco-grief that help to understand the multifactorial nature of these phenomena. The six categories of coping strategies are in line with traditional coping models, and they are linked in various ways to pro-environmental behavior and the management of negative emotions. The results can help practitioners to gain a deeper understanding of emotions relate…
The wellbeing paradox in Hungarian local sustainable agriculture
This study provides participants' perspectives on the health and wellbeing costs of sustainable farming. Newer producer-consumer connections require both time and experience and involve extra effort or skills, but farmers often lack these abilities. The results show how perceptions of work processes relate to the general framework of CSA, which necessitates a distinct strategy for farm management
Local food communities
Purpose While many characteristics of food consumption have been examined, little attention has been given to the health potential of consuming from local food communities. Local food communities, including community supported agriculture (CSA) are food initiatives, which try to respond to the healthy food, environmental or socioeconomic challenges of the food system. As a step toward understanding local food communities, this study sets out to e…
Folktales of Recovery – From Addiction to Becoming a Helper
Addiction research suggests that recovery narratives share common structural elements. For further investigation of this topic, the current study invoked Propp's folktale theory and method to identify narratemes within retrospectives to depict the stages of recovery. Semi-structured interviews were recorded about the experiences of six recovering helpers who had been sober for a minimum of five years and worked as a professional for at least one …

The research is embedded in the Hungarian context of drinking habits, culture, society, and alcohol policy. Methods: This qualitative study comprised the thema…
Associations of time perspectives and attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help
Previous research has shown the importance of time perspectives (TP) in future-oriented decision making. However, the possible associations between time perspectives and seeking out psychological help in need have not been examined extensively, especially taking further influencing factors into consideration. Therefore, this study aimed to assess associations between personal time perspectives, stigma, socio-economic factors, and attitudes toward…
New psychoactive substance use as a survival strategy in rural marginalised communities in Hungary
Mapping qualitative research in psychology across five Central-Eastern European countries
This study describes the current state of qualitative psychology and gives an overview of the philosophical paradigms used in English language qualitative psychology studies from the post-socialist countries of Central Eastern Europe. For political and historical reasons, academic life of this area is unique, providing a special field for investigation. This study explored the following research questions: Which philosophical paradigms are used i…
Synthetic Cannabinoids (SCs) in Metaphors
New psychoactive substances (NPS) remain a global public health and clinical challenge. Popular NPS include synthetic cannabinoids (SCs). A conceptual metaphorical analysis of user experiences of SCs was conducted in two European countries (Western and Central European). Metaphors are increasingly used to better understand drug user experiences and as medium to inform and guide clinical responses. Semi-structured interviews with 12 SC users were …
The experience of voice hearing and the role of self-help group
BACKGROUND: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) played an important role in the psychiatric diagnostics, but in the last few decades the diagnostic-free complex phenomenological understanding of the phenomena of voice hearing became the focus of studies. MATERIALS: Six semi-structured interviews with recovering voice hearers were conducted and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). DISCUSSION: The self-help group gives s…
Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to Assess Identity Formation Among Users of Synthetic Cannabinoids
Portrayal of New Psychoactive Substances in the Hungarian Online Media
A needle in the haystack – the dire straits of needle exchange in Hungary
There is a high probability that the combination of decreased NEP coverage and the increased injection risk of new psychoactive substances may lead in Hungary to a public health disaster similar to the HIV outbreaks in Romania and Greece. This can be avoided only by an immediate change in the attitude of the Hungarian government towards harm reduction
New cases of HIV among people who inject drugs in Hungary
Someone Else’s Problem”
Media monitoring is an important method to inform public health and prevention services about emerging health issues, such as new psychoactive substances (NPS). This study assessed the portrayal of NPS in online Hungarian media in 2015 using qualitative content analysis. Hungarian online media considers the dealer to be the main cause of drug use, which is portrayed as a problem for youth, poor people, minorities, and rural populations. The point…
The Therapeutic Journeys of Recovering Helpers – an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis
Voice of the Psychonauts
Psychoactive drug use shows great diversity, but due to a disproportionate focus on problematic drug use, predominant nonproblematic drug use remains an understudied phenomenon. Historic and anecdotal evidence shows that natural sources of "psychedelic" drugs (e.g., mescaline and psilocybin) have been used in religious and spiritual settings for centuries, as well as for psychological self-enhancement purposes. Our study assessed a total of 667 p…

Rock Concerts in Hungary in the 1980s
In our study we analyse the characteristic features of rock concerts in Hungary during the last years of communist rule. We distinguish between 'state rock', a trend similar to pop music, and 'concert rock'. During the 1980s we carried out participant observation at rock concerts and conducted interviews with young concert goers. We view rock concerts as scenes from a musical subculture in our study. The effects of two types of rock concerts - ha…
Deviance-construction in Stalinist societies
This study is concerned with the definition of deviance and the processes of constructing deviance in Stalinist societies. Deviances created by the state in these societies are analyzed, especially from functionalist and phenomenologist aspects and by applying Foucault's approach. Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago is used as a starting point for the analysis. In his work, Solzhenitsyn dwells at length on the “deviances” and the process of deviance…

Injecting drug use, risk behaviour and risk environment in Hungary
Questions on the Interpretation of Drug Users' Autobiographies in a Country in the “Early” Phase of Drug Use
Illegal drug use in Hungary became a mass phenomenon after the political changes of 1990. It is only recently that autobiographies of recovered drug users and their family members have been written and published. The present author suggests that since the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) approach has no traditional roots in Hungary, recovery stories are obliged to follow another master narrative. All of these stories were published in book form. The aut…
Injecting equipment sharing and perception of HIV and hepatitis risk among injecting drug users in Budapest
In central European states, rates of HIV among injection drug users (IDUs) have been low although Hepatitis C (HCV) infection is widespread. The goal of our study was to assess HIV infection, risk perceptions and injecting equipment sharing among IDUs in Budapest, Hungary. Altogether 150 IDUs were interviewed (121 structured interviews between 1999 and 2000 and 29 ethnographic interviews between 2003 and 2004). The majority of them injected heroi…
