Vocalizing Search: How Voice Technologies Alter Consumer Search Processes and Satisfaction
The effect of voice technology on how consumers search for information online is explored. Results from a field survey of consumer experiences with voice-assisted search, three controlled experiments involving dictated (vs. typed) Google searches, and a supplemental experiment (N = 10,385) find that vocalizing (vs. typing) a query leads consumers to provide more specific, detailed descriptions of what they are seeking, which in turn yield search …
How Verb Tense Shapes Persuasion
When sharing information and opinions about products, services, and experiences, communicators often use either past or present tense (e.g., 'That restaurant was great' or 'That restaurant is great'). Might such differences in verb tense shape communication's impact, and if so, how? A multimethod investigation, including eight studies conducted in the field and lab, demonstrates that using present (vs. past) tense can increase persuasion. Natural…
Looking for Safety in All the Right Places: When Threatening Political Reality Strengthens Family Relationship Bonds
Elections and pandemics highlight how much one’s safety depends on fellow community members, a realization that is especially threatening when this collective perceives political realities inconsistent with one’s own. Two longitudinal studies examined how people restored safety to social bonds when everyday experience suggested that fellow community members inhabited inconsistent realities. We operationalized consensus political realities through…

How words for sensory experiences become terms: A cognitive approach
Given the double nature of experiencing food as individual as well as shared experience and knowledge, the question is how to connect the observed variability of expressing such a sensory experience with a normalized requirement for developing (food) terminology. On the basis of descriptions of food experiences in actual practices involving the way food is consumed, evaluated and expressed by individuals – experts or not – in all their diversity,…

Mentoring Relationship Closures in Big Brothers Big Sisters Community Mentoring Programs: Patterns and Associated Risk Factors
Previous research suggests that early mentoring relationship ( MR ) closures may have harmful consequences for the health and well‐being of youth participating in community‐based mentoring programs. However, knowledge of the factors that lead some MR s to close early has been slow to emerge. This study examined patterns and correlates of early versus on‐time MR closures among 569 youth participating in Big Brothers Big Sisters community mentoring…
Dynamics of Communicator and Audience Power: The Persuasiveness of Competence versus Warmth
The current research offers a new theoretical perspective on the relationship between power and persuasion. An agentic-communal model of power is presented that proposes power affects both the messages generated by communicators and the messages that persuade audiences. Compared to low-power states, high-power states produce a greater emphasis on information that conveys competence. As a consequence, high-power communicators generate messages wit…
Social class, power, and selfishness: When and why upper and lower class individuals behave unethically
Are the rich more unethical than the poor? To answer this question, the current research introduces a key conceptual distinction between selfish and unethical behavior. Based on this distinction, the current article offers 2 novel findings that illuminate the relationship between social class and unethical behavior. First, the effects of social class on unethical behavior are not invariant; rather, the effects of social class are moderated by whe…

Power and Choice: Their Dynamic Interplay in Quenching the Thirst for Personal Control
Power and choice represent two fundamental forces that govern human behavior. Scholars have largely treated power as an interpersonal construct involving control over other individuals, whereas choice has largely been treated as an intrapersonal construct that concerns the ability to select a preferred course of action. Although these constructs have historically been studied separately, we propose that they share a common foundation—that both ar…
Generous Paupers and Stingy Princes: Power Drives Consumer Spending on Self versus Others
This research examines how consumers' spending on themselves versus others can be affected by temporary shifts in their states of power. Five experiments found that individuals experiencing a state of power spent more money on themselves than on others, whereas those experiencing a state of powerlessness spent more money on others than on themselves. This effect was observed using a variety of power manipulations (hierarchical roles, print advert…
The Accentuation Bias: Money Literally Looms Larger (and Sometimes Smaller) to the Powerless
The present research explores how people’s place in a power hierarchy alters their representations of valued objects. The authors hypothesized that powerlessness produces an accentuation bias by altering the physical representation of monetary objects in a manner consistent with the size-to-value relationship. In the first three experiments, powerless participants, induced through episodic priming or role manipulations, systematically overestimat…

Our contribution is an attempt to articulate the polysemy of concept of common sense (shared sensory experience vs ordinary knowledge) by analysing the role of linguistic (lexical) forms in constructing cognitive categories for common senses, from the observed differences, in lexical forms as well as in discourses, between senses, and particularly between colour and odour categories. Colour categories, highly lexicalized contrast with odour “nami…
Soil Fertility and Biodiversity in Organic Farming
An understanding of agroecosystems is key to determining effective farming systems. Here we report results from a 21-year study of agronomic and ecological performance of biodynamic, bioorganic, and conventional farming systems in Central Europe. We found crop yields to be 20% lower in the organic systems, although input of fertilizer and energy was reduced by 34 to 53% and pesticide input by 97%. Enhanced soil fertility and higher biodiversity f…

Ecological interventions and the process of change for prevention: Wedding theory and research to implementation in real world settings
Considers a preventive intervention effort designed to modify the characteristics and regularities of the school environment so as to enhance the expectations conveyed to high risk students. Employing this case effort (Weinstein et al., 1991) as a base, several issues are highlighted that deserve greater attention in the design, implementation, assessment, and reporting of other preventively-focused social interventions. These issues include: (1)…

This paper outlines the evolution of the psychological approach of language (psychology of language, psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology) since 50 years. It focuses on the theoretical and conceptual dependancy of this field on linguistic and computational models, which mainly developped the syntactical analysis of language. However, experimental results concerning language processing (specifically lexical processing) tend to prove the inadequ…
