Association between triglyceride-glucose index and estimated 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease in Nigerian non-diabetic hypertensives
The Triglyceride Glucose (TyG) index is a new and sensitive marker of Insulin Resistance (IR). Its relationship with a 10-year cardiovascular risk (CVD) in hypertensives in Nigeria is currently unknown. This was a cross-sectional study involving 1,430 adult Nigerians with hypertension. The TyG index of subjects was divided into quartiles (Q1-Q4), and its association with 10-year CVD risk using Framingham 10-year Cardiovascular Risk Score was expl…
Prevalence, patterns and predictors of metabolic abnormalities in Nigerian hypertensives with hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype
Background Simultaneous presence of elevated waist circumference and hypertriglyceridemia (HTGW) is a simple and low-cost measure of visceral obesity, and it is associated with a plethora of cardio-metabolic abnormalities that can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and incident Type 2 diabetes mellitus. We decided to study the prevalence, patterns, and predictors of metabolic abnormalities in Nigerian hypertensives with the HTGW phenoty…
Prevalence of positive chronic kidney Disease screening in professional male long haul drivers at risk of cardiovascular Disease in Lagos, Nigeria
Professional male long distance drivers in addition to having very high prevalence of clustering of both CVD and CKD risk factors have a significant burden of asymptomatic CKD. UACR appears to be an earlier marker of CKD in this population. Health awareness promotion and aggressive risk factor reduction are advocated as ways to reduce this burden
Cooking Fuels in Lagos, Nigeria
Cooking with dirty-burning fuels is associated with health risk from household air pollution. We assessed the prevalence of and factors associated with the use of cooking fuels, and attitudes and barriers towards use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This was a cross-sectional, population-based survey conducted in 519 households in Lagos, Nigeria. We used a structured questionnaire to obtain information regarding choice of household cooking fuel …
