Medical Face Masks Do Not Affect Acid–Base Balance Yet Might Facilitate the Transmission of Staphylococcus aureus in Hospital Settings during the Covid-19 Pandemic
The presence of S. aureus was confirmed in both nasal carriers and non-carriers which may demonstrate the cross-contamination and spread of this bacterium via hands. S. aureus was found on external and internal surfaces of face masks of each type, and therefore could also be transmitted via hands from external sources. The 3 h exposure time is not sufficient for Gram-negative rods and mold contamination. Moreover, there were no significant differ…
The Value of Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) as a Prognostic Tool in Predicting Mortality in Covid-19—A Retrospective Cohort Study
Background: Due to the unpredictable nature of COVID-19, there is a need to identify patients at high risk of severe course of the disease and a higher mortality rate. Objective: This study aims to find the correlation between frailty and mortality in adult, hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Methods: Clinical records of 201 patients who suffered from COVID-19 and were hospitalized between October 2020 and February 2021 were retrospectively ana…
When Bodybuilding Goes Wrong—Bilateral Renal Artery Thrombosis in a Long-Term Misuser of Anabolic Steroids Treated with AngioJet Rheolytic Thrombectomy
Bilateral renal infarction is an extremely rare condition with only few cases reported in the literature. We present a case of bilateral renal infarction affecting an otherwise healthy 34 year old bodybuilder chronically misusing testosterone and stanozolol. The patient presented with severe flank pain mimicking renal colic and biochemical features of acute kidney injury. Diagnostic workup revealed thrombosis affecting both renal arteries. Subseq…
Association of ACE2 Gene Variants with the Severity of Covid-19 Disease—A Prospective Observational Study
The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus (SARS-CoV-2), has triggered an enormous scientific response. Many studies have focused on understanding the entry of the SARS-CoV-2 virus into the host cell. The angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) is recognized as the host receptor used by SARS-CoV-2 to enter its target cells. Recent studies suggest that ACE2 gene polymorphisms might be candidates for genet…
A Novel Index in the Prediction of Pneumonia Following Acute Ischemic Stroke
This study presents factors that show a significant association with the occurrence of pneumonia in patients with acute ischemic stroke. The calculated PNEUMOINDEX consists of data obtained at admission, namely NYHA III and IV heart failure, COPD, generalized atherosclerosis, NIHHS score on admission, and CRP/Hgb ratio, and shows high prediction accuracy in predicting hospital-acquired pneumonia in ischemic stroke patients
Spontaneous Pneumothorax in Covid-19 Patients Treated with High-Flow Nasal Cannula outside the ICU
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a global pandemic and a burden to global health at the turn of 2019 and 2020. No targeted treatment for COVID-19 infection has been identified so far, thus supportive treatment, invasive and non-invasive oxygen support, and corticosteroids remain a common therapy. High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), a non-invasive oxygen suppo…
Decompressive Craniectomy Improves QTc Interval in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients
ICP positively correlates with QTc interval in patients with isolated TBI, and DC for relief of ICH reduces QTc and spQRS-T. However, DC might also increase risk for life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, especially in ICH patients with notably prolonged QTc before and increased iCEB after DC
The Impact of Acute Kidney Injury in the Perioperative Period on the Incidence of Postoperative Delirium in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting—Observational Cohort Study
Recent data indicate that acute kidney damage leads to inflammation in the brain and other distant organs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acute kidney injury (AKI) according to the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcome (KDIGO) criteria on the occurrence of postoperative delirium in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). We performed a retrospective cohort analysis that included all consecutive pa…
The Efficacy of Inpatient vs. Home-Based Physiotherapy Following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
Background : Intensive post-operative physiotherapy after cardiac surgery helps to reduce the number of complications, accelerating convalescence and decreasing peri-operative mortality. Cardiac rehabilitation is aimed at regaining lost function and sustaining the effect of cardiac surgery. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of inpatient and home-based phase II physiotherapy following coronary artery bypass grafting, and inpatient …
