Environmental exposures, microbiome dynamics and chronic disease risk in climate-vulnerable regions
Environmental factors such as air pollution, weather events, and ambient toxins are major contributors to human disease, with disproportionate impacts on vulnerable populations. In Puerto Rico, chronic exposure to air pollution and ecological disruption poses significant public health risks, particularly for cancer and other chronic conditions. These risks are unevenly distributed, disproportionately affecting children and older adults, groups ce…
Strengthening Integrative Microbiome Research Through Regional Leadership
Microbiome science has revolutionized modern biology, shifting the focus from pathogens to the essential roles of beneficial microbes in health, metabolism, and ecosystems. Advances in genomic technologies like metagenomics have rapidly expanded our understanding of microbial diversity and function. Despite this progress, global microbiome research remains concentrated in high-resource regions, limiting diverse perspectives and opportunities in p…
Clinical Symptom Patterns as Predictors of Sars-CoV-2 Infection in Healthcare Workers in Puerto Rico
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS-CoV-2, has posed major risks for healthcare workers (HCWs) worldwide. This study assessed the prevalence of infection and its relationship with demographic and clinical characteristics among HCWs at the University of Puerto Rico Adult Hospital. A total of 132 individuals were enrolled, of whom six tested positive (4.55%). The study population was predominantly female (78.8%) with a mean age of 4…
Soy and Frequent Dairy Consumption with Subsequent Equol Production Reveals Decreased Gut Health in a Cohort of Healthy Puerto Rican Women
The U.S. Hispanic female population has one of the highest breast cancer (BC) incidence and mortality rates, while BC is the leading cause of cancer death in Puerto Rican women. Certain foods may predispose to carcinogenesis. Our previous studies indicate that consuming combined soy isoflavones (genistein, daidzein, and glycitein) promotes tumor metastasis possibly through increased protein synthesis activated by equol, a secondary dietary metabo…
