Exploring AI for intercultural communication: Open conversation
AI is not new. What is new, however, is the speed and depth of its expansion in almost every aspect of our lives. This discussion forum is dedicated to exploring new frontiers and agendas for language and intercultural communication research. In this concluding piece, we invite the contributors to share insights on five key questions: their experiences (Question 1), the challenges and opportunities that we face (Question 2), the strengths and ski…
Towards interculturally adaptive conversational AI
Among the many ways that AI technologies are becoming embedded in our social worlds is the proliferation of Conversational User Interfaces, such as voice assistants (e.g. Apple Siri and Amazon Alexa), chatbots and voice-based conversational agents. Such conversational AI technologies are designed to draw upon the designers’ understanding of interactional practices employed in human–human conversation, and therefore have implications for intercult…
Feeling, Judging, and Connecting: Guardian Descriptions and Perceptions of Human-Cat Dyad Play
Humans and domestic cats have a unique relationship that has changed progressively over 10,000 years. This dyad’s play behavior is especially interesting due to its potential role in fostering interspecies communication and bonding. However, human-cat play and guardians’ perceptions of its benefits and detriments may not be well understood. This study used a global online survey which included answers to open-text questions. Responses were analyz…
Educating Dora: Teaching a conversational agent to talk
Many organisations are witnessing the introduction of automated systems to mediate between them and their clients, often designed as dialogic user interfaces which are conversational in nature. Despite calls for the design of AI-powered conversational agents to draw on Ethnomethodological Conversation Analysis (EMCA), how an EMCA-informed conversation design can improve interactions between humans and conversational agents is yet to be empiricall…

Highlighting gaps in puppy research using Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory of human development
The use of an ecological model in puppy development research can help to capture the real-world complexity of development factors and outcomes. Using a modified version of Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model, we explored the real-world experiences of 20 Australian adults who had acquired and were subsequently raising a puppy in their home for companionship purposes. Our participants’ experiences offered insights into several gaps in the current …
Australian veterans’ experience of pet ownership: Benefits, costs, and moderating factors
Australian military veterans, like many veteran populations globally, experience mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and suicide, at rates higher than the general population. The impact of having a non-formally trained companion animal on veteran mental health is largely unknown, with literature focusing on trained assistance animals to look at specific illnesses. The aims of the current study were to assess …
Developing and Planning a Protocol for Implementing Health Promoting Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI) in a Tertiary Health Setting
The Ottawa Charter identifies that multiple levels of government, non-government, community, and other organizations should work together to facilitate health promotion, including in acute settings such as hospitals. We outline a method and protocol to achieve this, namely an Action Research (AR) framework for an Animal Assisted Intervention (AAI) in a tertiary health setting. Dogs Offering Support after Stroke (DOgSS) is an AR study at a major t…
The Good, the Bad, the Helpful: Qualitative Exploration of the Australian Puppy-Raising Experience Through Longitudinal Surveys
Dogs living in Western countries today are more likely to be considered a member of the family compared with those in previous generations. This shift in human–dog dynamics also affects how dogs are raised, the benefits perceived, and the challenges faced by guardians. To provide appropriate support to modern dog guardians, canine professionals need to understand their experience. This study aimed to better understand the lived experience of guar…
Implementing Stress-Reducing Veterinary Care: Perceptions of Australian Veterinary Professionals Working with Dogs
Veterinary care that incorporates a proactive, practical approach to reducing fear and stress (often referred to as stress-reducing or low-stress veterinary care) in companion animals in the veterinary context is becoming increasingly prevalent. However, the attitude of veterinary professionals toward these techniques is not well understood. This mixed-methods study utilized an online survey to provide an initial benchmark of the certifications f…

Australian and New Zealand Veterinary Students' Ranking of Issues in Aquatic Animal Welfare and Ethics
The welfare of aquatic animals is receiving increasing attention around the world, and this should be reflected in the veterinary curricular. Veterinary students in Australia and New Zealand ranked the importance of five pre-selected topics on aquatic animal welfare and ethical issues for newly qualified veterinarians in an online survey. They ranked aquatic animals' health and welfare issues, husbandry techniques of farmed fish, and the use of a…
Facilitation of positive social interaction through visual art in dementia: A case study using video-analysis
The aims of this exploratory study were: to investigate the process of visual art appreciation in a person with dementia, in real time; and to test the feasibility of using video-analysis as a method to explore this process by and with a person who has minimal verbal expression. Gallery personnel guided a woman with severe dementia around an exhibition. Audio-visual recordings of the interactions were analysed. Patterns were identified, and inter…
Conduct in Dementia: Video Analysis of Arts Interventions
This study applies video analysis to an investigation of interactions among people with dementia in a cultural context, specifically a visual art exhibition in a gallery. The study adopts a sociologically informed approach to explore the role of artworks and how these may be beneficial to dementia care, by focusing on meaning-making conversational practices among people living with dementia. The interactions of different individuals with various …
Discovering Interactional Authenticity: Tracking Theatre Practitioners Across Rehearsals
This study follows a group of actors over the course of a rehearsal period, as the theatre ensemble goes about the business of transforming a play-script into a performance. The analysis focuses on one short section of dialogue in the play, and follows the work that the actors do from their earliest attempts at staging this section through to the dress rehearsals. The chapter demonstrates how the actors modify the ways in which they format their …

Introduction to Special Issue on Transience: Emerging Norms of Language Use
In this introduction to the special issue, the concept of transience is introduced as a theoretical perspective and as an object of research. The perspective of transience foregrounds the temporality of norm formation, located within the practices of people on the move. The introduction suggests that it is beneficial to apply the concept of transience in order to understand processes of norm development, including those pertaining to language cho…
Mapping the Langscape-Developing Multilingual Norms in a Transient Project Community
This contribution explores the development of language choice practices within one transient project community, here an international theater ensemble. Transient project communities consist of groups, the members of which have been drawn together in order to complete some or other predetermined project. In projects constituted of members drawn from different linguistic backgrounds, this may involve the local development of interactional norms and…
The paradox from within: Research Participants Doing-Being-Observed
This article analyses a collection of cases from video recordings of naturally occurring interaction in institutional settings, where members display an orientation to the presence of the recording equipment. Such instances have been treated elsewhere as evidence of contamination of the ecology of the setting. The findings suggest that participants do remain aware of the recording activity, but that they publicly display when they are attending t…
Identities at odds: Embedded and implicit language policing in the internationalized workplace
This study offers an interaction analytic account of how linguistic identities in internationalized workplaces in Denmark are indexed against members' institutional positions in particular interactional contexts. Where language policy may not be explicitly articulated between members, it is still embedded in how participants micro-manage their interactions and implicit in how members display orientations to deviance, in the case of encountering o…
Animal-Assisted Interventions in Children's Hospitals: A Critical Review of the Literature
There is a perception in the scientific and general communities that hospitalized children benefit from visits by animals. Animal-assisted interventions (AAI), including animal-assisted therapy and animal-assisted activities, usually involving dogs, are thus employed in pediatric hospitals. However, the actual prevalence of AAI in children's hospitals has been poorly documented in the literature. Furthermore, the evidence base for claims that chi…
