3D intra-segmental coordination in backpack load carriage with and without trekking poles
Backpack carriage is common in outdoor activities. These outdoor adventures require carrying a significant load for an extended period, demanding continuous physical effort and locomotor adaptations. The aim was to analyse and compare the intra-segmentar coordination of the shank, during gait cycle, while carrying a backpack, with and without trekking poles. The protocol involved one male recreational hiker walking 30 meters on level terrain at a…
Effects of Martial Arts Intervention in Children and Young People with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)
Based on the included studies, MA interventions demonstrate potential as an effective motor intervention approach for children and adolescents with DCD. Findings consistently indicated significant improvements in motor competence, balance, muscle strength, and coordination, with additional benefits observed in cognitive and psychosocial domains and no reported adverse effects
Learning to cycle
Background Cycling is a foundational movement skill which represents an important motor milestone to achieve in children’s lives. The use of a bicycle with training wheels is the most common approach for learning how to cycle, although some evidence suggests that this approach is counterproductive.Purpose Underpinned by an ecological dynamics and Constraints-led approach, this study investigated whether learning how to ride a conventional bicycle…
Training programmes to learn how to ride a bicycle independently for children and youths
Learning to Cycle
Background Learning to cycle is an important milestone for children, but the popularity of cycling and the environmental factors that promote the development and practice of this foundational movement skill vary among cultures and across time. This present study aimed to investigate if country of residence and the generation in which a person was born influence the age at which people learn to cycle. Methods Data were collected through an online …
Learning to Cycle
The balance bike (BB) has been pointed out as being the most efficient learning bicycle due to its inherent stimulation of balance. However, the process of acquiring the control of balance on the BB has not been explored. This study aimed to: (i) categorize the cycle patterns of children on the BB, (ii) compare the cycle patterns in different stages of learning (before and after six sessions of a BB practice program), and (iii) verify whether vel…
Learning to Cycle
Children who used the BB as the first bike had a significantly lower LA than children who did not use it ( p 0.001). To maximize its effects, the BB should be used in the beginning of the learning process
Learning to Cycle
The present article aimed to verify whether the age at which children learn to ride a bicycle is related to their physical activity or birth order. Data were collected from an online structured survey between November 2019 and June 2020. A total of 8614 responses were obtained from 22 countries. The results reveal significant differences in learning age depending on the frequency of physical activity (F(5, 7235) = 35.12, p 2 = 0.24). People who e…
Exploratory study on maturation and competition level in young karate practitioners
Paring children improve the chance for success and reduce injury in sport. Despite the maturity differences between children, chronological age remains the main criterion to equalize competition levels, but with limited efficiency. However, in Karate, weight is also considered. We went to investigate the association between chronological age and maturational indicators and find simple models to put on reflection new ways to assess the maturity. D…
Metabolic and energetics characterization and gender comparison in prepubertal karate practitioners
The number of children practicing karate is constantly increasing. It is necessary to provide correct information to the karate masters/coaches about this specific population, so they can properly develop karate training processes without causing any harm to practitioners but, on the contrary, contribute to the harmonious development of children and youths. This study was carried out with twenty-one prepubertal karate practitioners, male and fema…
Karate training effect in balance control in children with developmental coordination disorder
The developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a motor disorder identified and recognized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which affects 6% of school-age children (Vaivre-Douret, 2014; Vaivre-Douret et al., 2011). DCD children reveal problems in their development of fine and/or global motor coordination, difficulty in the motor control and learning, and in the acquisition of new motor skills (Vaivre-Douret, 20…
