  • Bridging Borders? Possible Ritual Connections in Figurative Finds between Hunter-Fisher-Gatherers and Early Farmers

    Valeska Becker•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica•2026

Contacts between farming and hunting-fishing-gathering communities have been explored at various levels, ranging from material culture to domesticates and aDNA. An aspect that has barely been considered so far is whether there was also an exchange of worldviews, or rites and rituals. Those can, for example, be expressed through figurative objects made of bone, wood, antler, or clay. The article compares figurative objects from two study areas and…

  • Figurative representations of the fourth millennium BC in Central, Western and Southeastern Central Europe

    Valeska Becker•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2026

The fourth millennium BC in western, central and southeastern central Europe is mostly known for its overarching cultural phenomena like the Baden and Funnel Beaker cultures, the invention of the wheel and the widespread use of animal traction. However, it also features a diverse range of figurative finds: figurines, vessels, petroglyphs, incised and applied human and animal representations. In this paper, their origins will be explored, after wh…

  • Domestic and wild animals in ancient Artaxata. Faunal report

Valeska Becker•ARTICLE•ARAMAZD Armenian Journal of Near…•2025

Since 2018, new excavations in the Lower City of Artaxata, Armenia, have yielded thousands of animal bones. They provide valuable inside into the life of the ancient city and the relations between humans and animals in the time between the second century BC and the second century AD. The analysis of the bones is still ongoing. For now, the data proves a heavy focus on sheep and goats to a point where we can speak of specialized production. Cattle…

  • The Origin, Development and Decline of Lengyel Culture Figurative Finds

    Open Access•Valeska Becker•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The Lengyel culture (4800–4100 calBC), covering Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, is a hotspot for figurative finds, with especially high numbers occurring in Lower Austria, Moravia and Transdanubia. After the end of the Linear Pottery Culture, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines, vessels and applications appear in huge numbers, which is in stark contrast to post-LBK phenomena further to the west, like Hinkelstein–Gr…

  • Counting and comparing

Open Access•Rebecca Bristow, Valeska Becker et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2025•Cited by: 2

As Neolithic figurative finds – that is to say anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines, vessels, applications and impressions – were uncovered in Europe and the Near East, it was quickly apparent that they all shared common features over several millennia and thousands of kilometres: they were made of clay, usually depicted women, and were found in settlements. This led to cross-cultural comparisons and, in turn, wide-ranging interpretations reg…

  • Figurative Representations in the North European Neolithic—Are They There

    Open Access•Rune Iversen, Valeska Becker et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 36

This article offers a comprehensive survey of figurative finds from Neolithic northern Europe. The survey shows that the immediate absence of figurative representation in the region is real and that the almost complete lack of figuration stands out from the previous Mesolithic and the contemporary northern and northeastern European Neolithic hunter-gatherer groups. Furthermore, the absence of figurative representations contrasts strongly with the…

  • Bodies of Clay

Open Access•Heiner Schwarzberg, Heiner Schwarzberg and Valeska Becker et al.•ARTICLE•Les Carnets de l ACoSt•2019

Since the earliest use of pottery, vessels have been associated with both the general shape and specific parts of the human body. The production of human-shaped pottery might be understood as one element of the spectrum of figural art in prehistoric communities. The idea of studying anthropomorphic pottery and the return of human beings into a body made of clay, which forms the core theme of this collection of 12 papers, stems from work on anthro…

  • O Design Audiovisual como opção metodológica para a produção radiofônica

    Open Access•Daniel Gambaro, Valeska Becker•ARTICLE•Matrizes•2018•References: 4

  • We are One

Open Access•Valeska Becker, Maciej Dębiec et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2018

This paper discusses anthropomorphic representations from two Ukrainian sites that can be dated to the Linear Pottery Culture. They can be categorized as applications and incised human representations. Although their posture is similar, their significance was likely different. The applications were fixed to vessels’ walls in such a way that they look inside the container, whereas the incised representations look outward, facing anyone that would …

  • Queda de audiência e programação televisiva

    Open Access•Daniel Gambaro, Valeska Becker•ARTICLE•Fronteiras - estudos midiáticos•2016

The audience of Brazilian free-to-air TV is falling, requiring networks to review their commercial strategies, especially the programming schedule. The current scenario shows strong audience migration towards internet and pay TV, which has accentuated since 2006. Historically consolidated shows, such as newscast and telenovela, are amid the most affected. Both shows are the pillars for Globo Network’s schedule, thus, the broadcaster is the most i…

  • Early and middle Neolithic figurines - the migration of religious belief

    Open Access•Valeska Becker•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2007•Cited by: 6

In Linear Pottery Culture, two types of anthropomorphic figurines are distinguishable: Type 1 figurines have a columnar body, without legs or hips, while Type 2 figurines show more detail in their body shape. These two types have parallels in the Neolithic of south-east Europe, especially in the Starčevo culture. These parallels become evident not only in the shape of the body, but also in other features such as sexual characteristics, breakage p…
