Perspectives on Regional and Enterprise Marginality: Dairying in Michigan's North Country1
Dairy farmers in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, an economically marginal rural region, are encumbered by contextual constraints that are not similarly faced by their downstate counterparts. However, this does not mean that they are any less ambitious or less efficient in dealing with the resources available to them. Indeed, dairying and similar small-scale economic enterprises in this and other marginal contexts may be quite competitive and sustaina…

Some Plan to Become Teachers: Determinants of Career Specification Among Rural Youth in Norway, Germany, and the United States
This comparative study deals with the selection of teaching as a career goal. To comprehend the meaning of observed differences in the relative popularity of teaching vis-a-vis other professional career alternatives, the general patterning of status ambitions is also explored. Sex and class differentials hold cross-nationally and are maintained with other variables controlled. A career in teaching is an important means for lower status youths and…

Appalachia in the Sixties: Decade of Reawakening
In The Southern Appalachian Region: A Survey, published by the University Press of Kentucky in 1962, Rupert Vance suggested a decennial review of the region's progress. No systematic study comparable to that made at the beginning of the decade is available to answer the question of how far Appalachia has come since then, but David S. Walls and John B. Stephenson have assembled a broad range of firsthand reports which together convey the story of …

Tractorization of Agriculture: The Social History of a German Village1
TRACTORIZATION OF AGRICULTURE: THE SOCIAL HISTORY OF A GERMAN VILLAGEThis paper explores certain aspects of the phenomena associated with rural modernization in a selected case. It traces the chain of events and changes in attitudes that led to the introduction of tractors and, subsequently, to the problem of 'over-mechanization' of agriculture in a once traditional, relatively isolated, peasant village in southern Germany. An acculturation model …
Some Theoretical Guidelines toward a Sociology of Migration
The question is beginning to be debated in the field of migration studies as to whether it is possible to formulate an explanatory theory general enough to cover the whole process of emigration and immigration. Charles Price thinks it is doubtful that we are ready for a general account couched in terms of formal theory (Australian Immigration: A Bibliography and Digest, 1966, p. A52). On the other hand, Everett S. Lee has attempted to present a g…
Some Theoretical Guidelines toward a Sociology of Migration
General Theory in the Study of Migration: Current Needs and Difficulties
The need for a more comprehensive, general theoretical approach to the study of migration is widely recognized by sociologists and other behavioral scientists. At present, no major synthesizing effort, directly relevant to the concerns of sociologists, exists. Against a background of recent trends and lines of inquiry in migration research, drawn from an extensive review of the current literature, probable reasons are suggested for this "lag" in …
