  • Initial evidence for neural correlates following a therapeutic intervention: Altered resting state functional connectivity in the default mode network following attention training technique

Open Access•Torben Müller, Svenja Krug et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

We found a first hint of a change at the neural level on the basis of ATT. Whether the changes in rsFC found here indicate an improvement in the flexible shift of attentional focus due to ATT needs to be investigated in further research paradigms. Further experiments have to show whether this change in functional connectivity can be used as a specific outcome measure of ATT treatment

  • Short sleep duration in adults with congenital heart disease is associated with epicardial adipose tissue accumulation

Open Access•Britta Stapel, Lotta Winter et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Short sleep duration has been linked to an increased risk of cardiometabolic disorders and adverse outcomes, including hospitalization and mortality, in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). We assessed the association between sleep duration and cardiovascular parameters in adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD). Data were derived from the ongoing PSYConHEART study on morbidity and mortality factors in ACHD. Sleep duration, sociodemogr…

  • Improving mental well-being in psychocardiology—a feasibility trial for a non-blended web application as a brief metacognitive-based intervention in cardiovascular disease patients

Open Access•Katharina Larionov, Ekaterina Petrova et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Applying a metacognitive-based brief intervention via a non-blended web app seems to show good acceptance and feasibility in a small target group of patients with CVD. Future studies should further develop, improve and validate digital psychotherapy approaches, especially in patient groups with a lack of access to standard psychotherapeutic care

  • Impact of relationship status on psychological parameters in adults with congenital heart disease

Open Access•Britta Stapel, Nicole Scharn et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Relationships status was associated with depression, while sex was associated with anxiety in ACHD patients. Relationship status as well as potential relationship problems, and the importance of social support for mental and physical well-being, should be considered when treating ACHD patients

  • Prevalence of Mental Disorders in Patients With Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension

Open Access•Madelaine-Rachel Dering, Nicole Lepsy et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Mental disorders are common in patients with CTEPH and associated with an impaired QoL. The HADS may be a useful screening tool for panic and depression disorders in patients with CTEPH. Further research on therapeutic strategies targeting mental disorders in patients with CTEPH is needed

  • Childhood Maltreatment, Mental Well-Being, and Healthy Lifestyle in Patients With Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension

    Open Access•Nicole Lepsy, Madelaine-Rachel Dering et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

We found a higher rate of child maltreatment in patients with CTEPH in comparison to the German population. Correlations suggest moderate associations between CTQ scores and mental health and QoL. Child maltreatment had no significant impact on disease severity. Further investigation on proper interventions to support affected patients is needed

  • Behavioral pathway to a broken heart: The link between adverse childhood experiences, depression, physical exercise and cardiovascular health

Open Access•Sebastian Bertele, Ivo Heitland et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Using mediation analyses, we show that adverse childhood events are linked to increased depressive symptoms, which are linked to decreased physical activity, which in turn are linked to a higher amount of epicardial adipose tissue. While other pathways most certainly exist and replication is needed, this suggests a meaningful pathway via which ACEs lead to adverse cardiovascular health, with several potential targets for health interventions acro…

  • Metacognitive Short-Term Intervention in Patients With Mental Disorders Following Cardiovascular Events

Open Access•Philippa Gebhardt, Flora Caldarone et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Our results suggest that a brief internet-based metacognitive treatment may be a promising tool for patients with CVDs and comorbid mental disorders. Feasibility and acceptance of the intervention was rated high by the patients. Further research is necessary to support the preliminary findings and to adapt and evaluate the intervention in a controlled clinical trial setting

  • Metacognitions in Patients With Frequent Mental Disorders After Diagnosis of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

Open Access•Flora Caldarone, Philippa Gebhardt et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Our results suggest that in the context of PAH, dysfunctional metacognitions are associated with MDD and PD. Therefore, a metacognitive approach to treat and prevent those mental illnesses seems promising and should be investigated in future studies

  • Factors That Influence Adherence to Medication in Adults With Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD)

Open Access•Tim Halling, Steffen Akkermann et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Objective: Innovative operative and interventional procedures have improved survival in congenital heart disease (CHD), and today more than 90% of these children reach adulthood. Consequently, adherence and psychosocial issues are becoming increasingly important because non-adherence to treatment recommendations worsens morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to identify factors modifying adherence to medication in adult congenital heart diseas…

  • Prevalence of Child Maltreatment in Adults With Congenital Heart Disease and Its Relationship With Psychological Well-Being, Health Behavior, and Current Cardiac Function

Open Access•Phileas J Proskynitopoulos, Ivo Heitland et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: The prevalence of child maltreatment in adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) has not been assessed so far. Child maltreatment is a major risk factor for unfavorable behavioral, mental, and physical health outcomes and has been associated with decreased quality of life. Given the increased survival time of ACHD, it is essential to assess factors that may worsen the quality of life and interact with classical cardiovascular risk …

  • Prevalence of Mental Disorders and Impact on Quality of Life in Patients With Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

Open Access•Karen M Olsson, Tanja Meltendorf et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Objective: Mental health may affect the quality of life (QoL) in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). However, mental disorders have not been systematically assessed in these patients. We examined the prevalence of mental disorders using structured interviews and determined their impact on QoL in patients with PAH. Methods: This study included 217 patients with PAH from two German referral centers. Psychiatric disorders were asses…

  • Secondary Traumatic Stress, Mental State, and Work Ability in Nurses—Results of a Psychological Risk Assessment at a University Hospital

Open Access•Christian Bock, Ivo Heitland et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Psychological risk assessment is a legal obligation for companies and part of occupational safety and employment protection in Germany. However, data from psychological risk assessments in nursing staff are scarce, although this population is at increased risk for secondary traumatic stress by patient experienced trauma. Therefore, our study aimed at examining the frequency of reported secondary trauma events, secondary traumatic stress, and its …

  • Reducing the Emotionality of Auditory Hallucination Memories in Patients Suffering From Auditory Hallucinations

    Open Access•Suzy J M A Matthijssen, Ivo Heitland et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2019

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy targets emotionally disturbing visual memories of traumatic life events, and may be deployed as an efficacious treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder. A key element of EMDR therapy is recalling an emotionally disturbing visual memory while simultaneously performing a dual task. Previous studies have shown that auditory emotional memories may also become less emotional as a conseque…
