New Evidence of King MḤDYS
The role assigned by the late antique poet Nonnus of Panopolis (mid-fifth century CE) to Modaios, king of the ‘Indians’, in a few passages of his huge poem Dionysiaca, suggests that the choice of the character may be attributable to a connection between the Greek name of the king (Μωδαῖος) and the somewhat enigmatic MḤDYS, a mid-fifth-century king of Aksum, known only from numismatic evidence. The hypothesis opens the way to further reflection on…
Late Antique Poetry and Its Reception
This chapter deals with the classicizing poetry of Late Antiquity and its reception in subsequent centuries. After defining the chronological boundaries of late antique poetry (4th–7th century), it focuses on some crucial issues, like the continuity/reappearance of some late antique forms and types, and the presence of late antique poetic features, in particular the “modern style” (i.e. of Nonnus of Panopolis and his followers) in Byzantine poetr…

Nonnus and Late Antique Society
Study on the role of Nonnus' poems in late antique society. The article suggests that Nonnus in both his poems intended to address cultural and ideological issues relevant to his audience.
Praising the God(s)
This paper studies the reception of the Homeric Hymns in some pagan and Christian poets of Late Antiquity. It offers some methodological remarks on ‘quotations’ or ‘allusions’ and re-use of epic code; and on the need to distinguish between instances of epic language reused by Late Antique poets and actual quotations or borrowings from the Homeric Hymns. After an overall view on the presence of the Hymns in some major poets of Late Antiquity (espe…
L’epillio nelle Dionisiache? Strutture dell’epica nonniana e contesto culturale
Greek Poetry
Scholars have expressed increasing appreciation for the uniqueness of late Greek poetry which had long been dismissed as a mere continuation of the great classical and Hellenistic poetry. This article presents an overview of Greek poetic production in Late Antiquity, focusing on the issues of relationships between poetry and prose, rhetorical structures, social contexts, and performances
Paideia classica e fede religiosa
I carmi epigrafici dell’Oriente tardoantico (fine III-VI sec. d.
Saxa loquuntur? Epigrammi epigrafici e diffusione della paideia nell’Oriente tardoantico
This paper deals with the reading and the reception of Greek epigraphic epigrams in Late Antiquity. Inner features of the texts — repeated allusions to the ‘voices’ of the poems, frequency of dialogic structures —, as well as aspects of the mise en page, combined with literary testimonies, lead to conclude that in Late period also epigraphic epigrams were read aloud, through an ‘oralised’ reading. The high literary language and style of many late…
Literariness and Levels of Style in Epigraphical Poetry of Late Antiquity
Nowadays, scholars usually speak of a ‘renaissance’ of poetry in the Greek literature of late antiquity, underlining at the same time the new relevance of poetic communication in late antique society and the renewal of our interest in this not so well-known production of late Greek literature. Renaissance and related terms are, of course, effective ways to describe the flowering of Greek poetry from the fourth to sixth centuries CE, so long as th…
