Babytalk as a communication of intimate attachment: An initial study in adult romances and friendships
Babytalk is a speech register that has been studied most extensively as it is spoken by mothers to infants, but without attention to its possible role in emotional bonding. We suggest that babytalk plays such a role–that it expresses and facilitates intimate psychological connection, and in a variety of relationships. We first overview relevant literature to show that an association between babytalk and intimate attachment makes sense. Then we re…
Exposure Frequencies and Sensation-Seeking: No Novelty Effect but an Unexpected Experimenter Subject Sex Interaction
To test the hypothesis that individuals who are very sensitive to novel experiences do not show the usual exposure frequence-preference pattern, high and low sensation-seeking African-American subjects were exposed serially in random balanced order a set of 10 Japanese ideographs at 0, 1, 3, 9, and 27 frequencies. Both high and low sensation-seekers manifested the usual pattern of preference for stimuli exposed at higher frequencies and no suppor…
Motivation and Class Mobility in England: Longitudinal Evidence of a Causal Relationship
Relationships between motive to avoid failure and long-term occupational social class mobility were examined. Individuals low in motive to avoid failure, operationalized as test anxiety, were upwardly mobile in social class level of occupational attainment from 1966 to 1985; individuals high in motive to avoid failure were not. A cause-effect relationship was inferred; a strong avoidance motive inhibited upward occupational class mobility. The da…
Effects of Sex Ratios on Occupational Prestige and Desirability Among Black and White University Students
This study attempted to replicate Touhey's (1974a. 1974b) research on the effect of increased proportion of women incumbents on the prestige and desirability of six high status occupations. The subjects. 200 black and white male and female college students rated these occupations under instruct ions that they were either low and stable or high and increasing in proportion of women. Proportion of women did not affect the prestige ratings of the oc…

Motives of Negro Americans Who Aspire to Traditionally Open and Closed Occupations
The aspirations of Negro American college students to occupations which traditionally have been open or closed to them were examined as functions of (a) the predominantly middle or working class status of the college attended and (b) individual differences in achievement, affiliation, and power motivation. Among Negro students in a middle class Negro college aspiration to traditionally open occupations was associated with weak affiliation motivat…

An Empirical Relationship between N Affiliation and the F Scale
Newcomb (1961, pp. 139-140) has recently reported a finding which tentatively suggests that low authoritarianism is related to high n Affiliation. Data reported here partially support Newcomb's finding but indicate that the relationship berween n Affiliation and authoritarianism is more complex. Metbod.-Thematic apperceptive n Affiliation scores were obtained from 284 Ss taking introductory psychology at the beginning of the 1961 fall semester. A…
