Open Access•Lilian Dudley, Ian Couper et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

This scoping review used the Arksey and O’Malley approach to explore COVID-19 preparedness and response in rural and remote areas to identify lessons to inform future health preparedness and response planning. A search of scientific and grey literature for rural COVID-19 preparedness and responses identified 5 668 articles published between 2019 and early 2022. • Comparing in-person, blended and virtual training interventions; a real-world evaluation of HIV capacity building programs in 16 countries in sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Elsie Kiguli-Malwadde, Maeve Forster et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

We sought to evaluate the impact of transitioning a multi-country HIV training program from in-person to online by comparing digital training approaches implemented during the pandemic with in-person approaches employed before COVID-19. We evaluated mean changes in pre-and post-course knowledge scores and self-reported confidence scores for learners who participated in (1) in-person workshops (between October 2019 and March 2020), (2) entirely as…

  • Training for Transformation

Open Access•Jana Müller, Cameron Reardon et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: In 2018, Stellenbosch University's Ukwanda Centre for Rural Health led a faculty initiative to expand undergraduate health professions training to a new site, 9 hours drive from the health sciences campus in the sparsely populated Northern Cape Province of South Africa in the town of Upington. This is part of a faculty strategy to extend undergraduate health sciences training into an under-resourced part of the country, where there is…

  • Preparing Graduates for Interprofessional Practice in South Africa

Open Access•Jana Müller, Ian Couper•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

With South Africa's tumultuous history and resulting burden of disease and disability persisting post-democracy in 1994, a proposed decentralization of heath care with an urgent focus on disease prevention strategies ensued in 2010. Subsequently a nationwide call by students to adapt teaching and learning to an African context spoke to the need for responsive health professions training. Institutions of higher education are therefore encouraged t…

Open Access•Sharon Fonn, Sunanda Ray et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2021

District health managers (DHMs) lead and manage Ministry of Health programmes and system performance. We report on the acceptability and feasibility of inter-related activities to increase the agency of DHMs in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda using a cross-sectional rapid appraisal with 372 DHMs employing structured questionnaires. We found differences and similarities between the countries, in particular, who becomes a DHM. The opportuni…

  • Building consensus on key priorities for rural health care in South Africa using the Delphi technique

Open Access•Marije Versteeg, Lilo du Toit et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2013

BACKGROUND: South Africa is currently undergoing major health system restructuring in an attempt to improve health outcomes and reduce inequities in access. Such inequities exist between private and public health care and within the public health system itself. Experience shows that rural health care can be disadvantaged in policy formulation despite good intentions. The objective of this study was to identify the major challenges and priority in…

  • Developing a new mid-level health worker

Open Access•Jane Doherty, Daphney Conco et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2013

BACKGROUND: Mid-level medical workers play an important role in health systems and hold great potential for addressing the human resource shortage, especially in low- and middle-income countries. South Africa began the production of its first mid-level medical workers - known as clinical associates - in small numbers in 2008.
