  • Latitudinal differences of changes in Northern Hemisphere clear-sky outgoing longwave radiation over the past 4 decades (1979–2021)

Open Access•Lynn Aria Hirose, David Paynter et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Earth’s energy budget is modulated by climate forcings and feedbacks. Outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) is a critical component of the Earth’s energy budget, and the balance between absorbed solar radiation and OLR determines the net gain of energy of the entire climate system. Radiation computations using 43 years of ERA5 reanalysis profiles show an increase in clear-sky OLR in the polar regions and a decrease in the tropics. To understand this …

  • How atmospheric humidity drives the outgoing longwave radiation–surface temperature relationship and inter-model spread

Open Access•Jing Feng, David Paynter et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

The Earth’s global radiation budget depends critically on the relationship between outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) and surface temperature ( T s ). Using the fifth generation of European ReAnalysis dataset, we find that although OLR appears to be linearly dependent on T s over a wide range, there are significant deviations from the linearity in the OLR– T s relationship for regions warmer than 270 K T s , which covers 89% of the surface of Eart…

  • Extending the relationship between global warming and cumulative carbon emissions to multi-millennial timescales

Open Access•Thomas L Frölicher, David Paynter et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

The transient climate response to cumulative carbon emissions (TCRE) is a highly policy-relevant quantity in climate science. The TCRE suggests that peak warming is linearly proportional to cumulative carbon emissions and nearly independent of the emissions scenario. Here, we use simulations of the Earth System Model (ESM) from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) to show that global mean surface temperature may increase by 0.5 C afte…
