  • Onset and maturation of Asian summer monsoon precipitation reconstructed from intra-annual tree-ring oxygen isotopes from the southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Open Access•Chenxi Xu, Haifeng Zhu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

We present a long-term seasonal tree ring cellulose oxygen isotope (δ 18 O c ) time series created by analyzing four segments (S1, S2, S3, and S4) per year during the period of 1951–2009 from southeastern Tibetan Plateau. This intraseasonal δ 18 O c reveals the onset and mature phase of the summer monsoon precipitation in this region. Analysis indicates that the δ 18 O c of S1 has the strongest correlation with precipitation during the regional m…

  • Quantitative attribution of climate effects on Hurricane Harvey’s extreme rainfall in Texas

Open Access•Shih‐Yu Wang, S-Y Simon Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

Hurricane Harvey made landfall in August 2017 as the first land-falling category 4 hurricane to hit the state of Texas since Hurricane Carla in September 1961. While its intensity at landfall was notable, most of the vast devastation in the Houston metropolitan area was due to Harvey stalling near the southeast Texas coast over the next several days. Harvey's long-duration rainfall event was reminiscent of extreme flooding that occurred in the ne…

  • Concurrent increases in wet and dry extremes projected in Texas and combined effects on groundwater

    Open Access•Jin‐Ho Yoon, Shih‐Yu Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

The US state of Texas has experienced consecutive flooding events since spring 2015 with devastating consequences, yet these happened only a few years after the record drought of 2011. Identifying the effect of climate variability on regional water cycle extremes, such as the predicted occurrence of La Nia in winter 2017-2018 and its association with drought in Texas, remains a challenge. The present analyses use large-ensemble simulations to pro…
