    Amanda Fragoso, António Fragoso•ARTICLE•Educational Gerontology•2025

    1. In 1969, Robert N. Butler first used the term ‘age-ism’ to draw attention to the fact that we had overlooked ‘age discrimination or ageism, prejudice by one age group towards other age groups’ (

In this article we aim at understanding the influence of social disadvantages on intergenerational solidarity. For this study, we have considered biographical research through narratives. These narratives help explain and reflect on the beliefs of the participants, implicit theories, and their life experiences. A snowball sampling technique was considered, and the data were collected by means of 58 narrative interviews with men aged between 60 an…

  • Combating Ageism through Adult Education and Learning

    Open Access•Amanda Fragoso, Josélia Fonseca•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 45

The demographic data and projections show that the world is ageing at a high pace and that this has transversal consequences to society. The available data on ageism show that it constitutes the most prevalent form of discrimination in Europe. Whilst this seems logical because ageism, potentially, affects everybody (unlike sexism or racism), public debates on the phenomenon are rare. The awareness of people of its importance is minimal, the resou…

In this article, we intend to reflect on community education in Portugal. We present a case study that illustrates both the rise and the fall of community education. The original investigation was a multiple case study. To gather information,…

  • The transition of mature students to higher education

Amanda Fragoso, António Fragoso et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in the Education of Adults•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 18

The Bologna Process, recently implemented in Portugal, has brought many changes to higher education institutions. One of these changes refers to a law that enables mature students (23 years and older) to gain special access to higher education, taking into account their professional experience and other biographical elements. The numbers of non-traditional students are therefore increasing in our country, making our academic population more diver…

Heidi Engesbak, Christin Tønseth et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Lifelong…•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 1

The focus of this article is the development of adult education. As Kjell Rubenson maintains, adult education has gone through three eras of development: the humanistic, the strong economic period and a softer version of the economic period. Based on this model, we examine whether the development of adult education has similarities across countries and time. The development of adult education is analysed in relation to political and social develo…

  • What can we learn from an analysis of adult education policies

Amanda Fragoso, António Fragoso et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Lifelong…•2002•Cited by: 2

This paper reviews Portuguese adult education policies from 1974 to 1999. A realistic portrait in the evolution of adult education system is important primarily, because it may be able to guide other researchers in their investigations. Secondly, this type of analysis allows us to reflect upon wider issues that could represent interesting points of debate at an international level. The Portuguese adult education system has shown considerable chan…
