In 2015, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This agenda has 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are “an urgent call for action by all countries”. Each of the 17 SDGs has a corresponding icon and a brief description of its targets.

  • Vicuñas ( Vicugna vicugna ), Wild Andean Altiplano Camelids

Bruno Vila, Bibiana Vilá et al.•ARTICLE•Case Studies in the Environment•2021

In these case studies, vicuñas are presented as biocultural components of the Andean altiplano’s socioecological landscape. The environmental history of vicuñas is related to the multiple values of the species, especially of its appreciated fiber as a nature contribution to people. Vicuñas were in risk of extinction, but thanks to conservation policies, the engagement of local communities, and the efforts of scientists and naturalists, this speci…

  • The Puna Pastoralist System: A Coproduced Landscape in the Central Andes

Open Access•Yanina Arzamendia, Verónica Rojo et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2021

In mountain socioecological systems, the interaction between nature and people is at the core of planning local long-term sustainable development strategies. Pastoralism is the main traditional socioeconomic livelihood in dryland mountains. It is strongly associated with long-established land use practices that provide essential material and relational contributions, both of which shape human populations and nature. The aim of this work is to cha…

  • Environmental Education as a Means for Valuing and Conserving Camelids and Pastoralism in the Argentinean Altiplano of Jujuy

Open Access•Bruno Vila, Bibiana Vilá et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2020

Andean pastoralism, like other pastoral systems around the world, is under stress due to climate change, land tenure regimes, pressures to become sedentary, difficulties in interacting with market-based economies, isolation, and youth emigration. Over the years, we have proposed different environmental education (EE) strategies targeting local Andean stakeholders and university students, including interventions in primary schools. This paper pres…

  • On the Brink of Extinction: Llama Caravans Arriving at the Santa Catalina Fair, Jujuy, Argentina

    Open Access•Bruno Vila, Bibiana Vilá•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2018

The practice of using llama (Lama glama) caravans has decreased in Jujuy, northwestern Argentina, in recent years. Peasants, in this area known as pastores, llameros, or caravaneros, belong to Andean indigenous communities in Nor Lipez, Bolivia. The llameros, with their caravans, travel essentially to barter llama fiber in exchange for industrial food-products, mainly flour and sugar. The caravan trip to and from Santa Catalina takes an average o…

  • A model for llama (Lama glamaLinnaeus, 1758) domestication in the southern Andes

Open Access•M Sprovieri, Hugo Yacobaccio et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropozoologica•2016•Cited by: 11•References: 31

The aim of this paper is to present a three-stage model that specifies the possible mechanisms for the domestication of the guanaco (Lama guanicoe cacsilensis Lönnberg, 1913), which gave origin to the llama (Lama glama Linnaeus, 1758). A more comprehensive analytical framework is proposed, beyond the wild-domestic dichotomy. The model takes into account the interaction of two components: animal and human behaviors. Simultaneously, we analyse the …
