The acquisition of prosody in American Sign Language
This is the first comparative analysis of prosody in deaf, native-signing children (ages 5;0–8;5) and adults whose first language is American Sign Language (ASL). The goals of this study are to describe the distribution of prosodic cues during acquisition, to determine which cues across age groups are most predictive in determining clausal and prosodic boundaries, and to ascertain how much isomorphy there is in ASL between syntactic and prosodic …
Trauma exposure, psychiatric disorders, and resiliency in juvenile-justice-involved youth
Recent studies suggest that juvenile-justice-involved youth have high levels of trauma exposure, and that trauma correlates with psychiatric disorders. We assessed the relationships between trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, substance abuse, and resiliency factors in a population of justice-involved youth in New Hampshire (NH) and Ohio. We screened 350 youth at 5 NH family courts, the NH juvenile detention center, NH reside…
Cognitive Decline and Older Adults' Perception of Stigma Controllability
Emerging research suggests that older adults who experience age-related declines in regulatory abilities may have more difficulty inhibiting their expression of negative bias to stigmatized individuals as compared with young adults. However, it remains largely unexplored why this might be. For instance, older adults may hold stigmatized individuals more accountable for their conditions as compared with young adults, which could subsequently incre…
Transformations for within-subject designs
Transformations for within-subject designs
We explored the use of transformations to improve power in within-subject designs in which multiple observations are collected for each S in each condition, such as reaction time and psychophysiological experiments. Often, the multiple measures within a treatment are simply averaged to yield a single number, but other transformations have been proposed. Monte Carlo simulations were used to investigate the influence of those transformations on the…
