Mediating Role of Supervisory Communication Practices on Relations Between Leader–Member Exchange and Perceived Employee Commitment to Workgroup
Based on a study on employees and their immediate manager in a Malaysian organization, we examine the total, direct, and indirect effects of supervisory communication practices with LMX and group commitment using structural equation modeling and bootstrap procedure. Based on our analysis, we found that within the group where the supervisor and subordinates are embedded, positive relationships communication, upward openness communication, and job-…
Self-Perceived Communication Competence in the Thai Culture
As intercultural communication and communication competence studies continue to develop, an understanding of how different cultures value these components of human communication is of considerable importance. This study focuses on Thai culture values related to self-perceived communication competence. Several measures of Thai students’ self-perceptions of their own competence in several contexts of communication were obtained—public speaking, mee…
An Examination of Reliability and Validity of the Religious Communication Apprehension Scale
Religious communication apprehension (RCA) is conceptualized as the anxiety or fear associated with either real or anticipated interaction about religion with people of other religions. A RCA scale was constructed and results from this study indicated that the scale is both generally valid and reliable. In this study, 426 participants completed surveys regarding their religious communication behavior. Findings also revealed a positive relationshi…
Communication Traits in First and Second Languages: Puerto Rico
Early research relating to communication apprehension (CA) indicated a strong association between CA in first and second language interactions in Puerto Rico and Micronesia. More recent research has indicated similar associations involving individuals from a variety of Asian cultures. The study discussed in this paper broadens the focus of attention to a variety of communication traits rather than a single trait. In addition to CA, the other trai…
Analysis and Improvement of the Measurement of Interpersonal Attraction and Homophily
Three decades ago measures of interpersonal attraction and homophily were introduced to the field. A substantial number of research studies have been reported that employed one or more of these measures. This research was examined to evaluate their reliability and validity. It is concluded that all of these measures are reasonably reliable and valid. However, since the reliabilities have been highly variable, it was determined that improved measu…

The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationships among ethnocentrism, intercultural communication apprehension, religious fundamentalism, homonegativity, and tolerance for religious disagreements. This study found a positive relationship between religious fundamentalism with ethnocentrism and homonegativity. The study further found a negative relationship between tolerance for religious disagreement with ethnocentrism and religio…
Motives and Communibiology's Texts: Whose Motives
The motive analysis included in Nelson's (2004) textual critique of the writings regarding communibiology is examined and found erroneous. It is suggested that the claim that traditional genre theories are contradicted by this analysis is not justified. The motives for communibiological texts alleged by Nelson are seen as preempted by the (conscious or nonconscious) motives of the critic
Eysenck's BIG THREE and communication traits: Three correlational studies
Over the past decade, communication scholars have increasingly considered biological contributions to the ways in which we communicate. One approach to exploring the links between biology and communication involves analysis of relationships between communication variables and variables containing strong biological underpinnings. The present study was designed to provide an examination of the relationship between Eysenck's personality dimensions a…
The impact of supervisor and subordinate immediacy on relational and organizational outcomes
Hypotheses were advanced based on the immediacy principle, accommodation theory, reciprocity theory, and previous research in another applied context which argue that increased nonverbal immediacy behaviors of supervisors have the potential to enhance subordinates' perceptions of that supervisor, increase subordinate satisfaction with the supervisor and communication with the supervisor, and increase motivation and job satisfaction on the part of…
Goodwill: A reexamination of the construct and its measurement
As a result of the controversy over the dimensionality of the ethos/source credibility construct and the associated plethora of empirical studies in the 1960s and 1970s, Aristotle's dimension of “goodwill” has been dismissed by many contemporary theorists and researchers. It is argued that this occurred as a result of errors made in the earlier empirical research and that “goodwill” can be measured, contrary to earlier claims, and should be resto…
Communication apprehension as temperamental expression: A Communibiological paradigm
Over the past two decades, a large amount of research focusing on correlates and consequences of communication apprehension has accumulated. Despite this massive research effort, few viable models of the development of the trait have been proffered. Also during the past twenty years, psychobiologists have made impressive strides toward the explanation of human behavior by identifying underlying neurological processes, especially in affective doma…
The development of a U.S. and generalized ethnocentrism scale
The two studies reported here deal with the development and validation of a generalized ethnocentrism scale. In Study 1 two scales, including USE, which was designed to assess ethnocentrism in the United States, and GENE, which was designed to measure generalized ethnocentrism, were administered to 396 participants. Their responses were subjected to exploratory factor analysis. In Study 2, the USE and a modified version of GENE along with seven p…
Reliability and validity of the willingness to communicate scale
The nature and assumptions underlying the Willingness to Communicate (WTC) scale are outlined and discussed. Data are discussed which relate to the reliability and validity of the instrument. It is concluded that the scale is of sufficient quality to be recommended for research and screening purposes.
Reliability and Separation of Factors on the Assertiveness-Responsiveness Measure

Measuring trait communication apprehension: A test of rival measurement models of the PRCA‐24
The purpose of the present investigation was to test three rival measurement models of a common measure of trait communication apprehension, the PRCA‐24. The rival models include a linear, unidimensional model, a Guttman simplex, and a second‐order factor structure. These models are discussed in terms of their conceptual implications, their psychometric properties, the empirical evidence needed for their support, and their implications for both p…
Self‐report as an approach to measuring communication competence
Approaches to measurement of communication competence are reviewed. The self‐report approach to measurement of communication competence is examined. It is concluded that self‐reports have little validity as indicants of competent communicative performances but may serve as useful measures of self‐perceptions which may function as precursors of communicative choices. The Self‐Perceived Communication Competence scale is suggested as a measure which…
