Citizenship in the Context of Contested Nationalism: Insights From Basque Social Movements
This paper contributes to knowledge about social movements' visions of citizenship. The aim is twofold: on the one hand, to offer an analysis of how social movements understand the subjective and objective dimensions of citizenship. On the other, to explore how a context of national conflict shapes activists' perspectives on this concept. To this end, it presents a case study focused on the Basque Country, a territory in which sub‐state nationali…
Prefigurative politics and sub-state nationalist movements. The case of young Basque-nationalist left activists
This article explores the relation between left-wing sub-state nationalist movements and late modern prefigurative politics, a field of study little developed until now. The analysis is based on a case study on nationalist youth activism in the Basque Country, carried out by means of a qualitative methodological approach using in-depth interviews. The reformulations and adjustments of discourse in the post-ETA nationalist movement were addressed …
Is the National Question a Problem for Social Movements? Activist Discourses from the Basque Country
This article describes the impact of the national issue in the contemporary context of Basque social movements. Feminist, socio-ecology, pro-migrant and pro-language activists participated in this qualitative research. Our analysis indicates that a disposition towards collaboration can be observed within the social movements investigated. While this represents a shift as compared to decades past, different and sometimes conflicting national imagi…
In favour of a Basque state. A paradigm shift
There have been changes in how support is rallied for the secessionist process in the Basque Country this century. We can appreciate a new scheme based on factors relating to welfare along with the traditional scheme based, above all, on factors relating to identity. How important is each of them? By using the statistical technique of logistic regression, we have been able to look deeper into the variables that explain being favourably disposed t…
Current discourses and attitudes in favour of the independence of the Basque Country
With the aim to win support for its political project, Basque nationalism has traditionally sought to get an increasingly larger number of people to share a national identity. However, in the twenty first century, we can appreciate another discourse, which goes beyond national sentiment, and includes aspects that are more related to social and personal wellbeing. This second discourse has given rise to a new attitude to the independence of the Ba…
The Importance of Historical Context: A New Discourse on the Nation in Basque Nationalism
All nationalist movements make use of a variety of aspects (language, history, race, etc.) of the territory claimed as a nation to build their discourse on said nation, and, though these discourses are often presented as something permanent and unchanging over time, they can change depending on the historical context. This is indicated by the Basque nationalist movement's two main discourses on the nation, as well as by what appears to be a tende…
ETA ceasefire: Armed struggle vs. political practice in Basque nationalism
In October 2011, the Basque armed organization ETA announced an end to its activities. This article aims at studying the reasons leading up to this unilateral decision which had been taken without prior negotiations or agreements. To this end, a large part of existing bibliography on the subject was consulted and most of the documents released by ETA in recent years, including those for internal use, were also reviewed. In our opinion, ETA reache…
Conflicting nationalist traditions and immigration: TheBasque case from 1950 to 1980
Immigration from the different regions inSpain to theBasqueCountry has traditionally opposedBasque andSpanish nationalism. This article provides an overview of the discourse of both nationalist traditions with respect to the intra‐regional migration movement of the second half of the twentieth century as well as of the resulting controversy. Whereas the Basque nationalist movement claims to have defended the need to integrate immigrants since the…
The Right to Self-determination and Basque Nationalism: A Polyvalent Debate
Literature on the right of self-determination has very often focused on a scholarly and theoretical debate on the legality and appropriateness of the said right. This article, on the other hand, examines the reasons adduced by political agents in favour of self-determination in the Basque Country. Far from a scholarly discussion, the political parties can appreciate a powerful instrumental component in the right to self-determination: rather than…
Basque nationalism's changing discourse on the nation
The discourse on the nation is one of the theoretical cores of all expressions of nationalism, but varies in its elaboration from one to another and even within one particular form of nationalism by virtue of the identifying aspects that can be used in each case, and of historical and spatial context. The article analyses the example of Basque nationalism, which, through time, has developed two great official discourses and a third non-official o…
