Don't smile until December
Despite over 30 years of educational research to the contrary, some educators continue to hold to classroom management theories along the lines of “don’t smile until December,” which pits consistency and control in the classroom against the kindness and caring that should also characterize the learning environment. We address the source of this controversy as faulty reasoning that sees expressions of care as competing with instructional values su…
Strategies for alleviating students' math anxiety
Mathematics educators often know the widespread nature of mathematics anxiety and may even be aware of the debilitating effect it can have on their students. Although educators may develop tricks or tools that seem to help, a comprehensive understanding of what students are experiencing and how the classroom environment can be adjusted to address their struggles is missing. Control-value theory offers a theoretical framework for how the classroom…
Moving Up! Or Down? Mathematics Anxiety in the Transition From Elementary School to Junior High

The current study addresses this gap by exploring group-based trajectories in mathematics anxiety during the transition to junior high school. Five trajectories are described: consistently low anxiety, consistently high anxiety, steady…
Perceived responsibility for learning, self-efficacy, and sources of self-efficacy in mathematics
A comparison of outcomes for children and youth in foster and residential group care across agencies
The influence of teachers’ self-efficacy on perceptions
Addressing Academic Dishonesty Among the Highest Achievers
Although research shows that higher-achieving students report engaging in cheating behaviors less frequently than lower-achieving students, the cheating rates among this population are still startling. Certain aspects of the context of being a high-achieving student support academic dishonesty. We investigate integrity among the highest achievers using a motivational framework, first examining why these students feel the need to cheat. We discuss…
Considering students in teachers' self-efficacy
Marriage amendments and psychological distress in lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults.
An online survey of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults (N 1,552) examined minority stress (I. H. Meyer, 2003) and psychological distress following the 2006 general election in which constitutional amendments to limit marriage to 1 man and 1 woman were on the ballot in 9 states. Following the November election, participants living in states that passed a marriage amendment reported significantly more minority stress (i.e., exposure to negativ…
