Paying Our Way in the World? Visible and Invisible Dangers of Brexit
The UK economy has long been associated with a weak balance of payments, reflecting an underlying growth model reliant on private household consumption. A deficit in goods trade, chiefly with the EU, has been offset by surpluses in services trade and foreign investment earnings. The Single Market provided wider markets for the UK, but did not fundamentally alter Britain's structural weaknesses. The Brexit vote took place against the background of…
Global Transformations: Politics, Economics and Culture
In this book, the authors set forth a new model of globalization that lays claims to supersede existing models, and then use this model to assess the way the processes of globalization have operated in different historic periods in respect to political organization, military globalization, trade, finance, corporate productivity, migration, culture, and the environment. Each of these topics is covered in a chapter which contrasts the contemporary …
Changes in developed countries' economic systems since the 1980s: Implications for Developing Countries
This article reviews changes in institutional arrangements among developed countries over the past twenty-five years, and assesses how far these can be explained in terms of recent theories of different models of capitalism. It argues that globalization has acted to undermine central features of the key models and weaken the position of labour. The account in this article points to limitations in the current varieties of capitalism approaches in …
Evaluating Marxian contributions to development economics
This paper evaluates the contribution of Marxian approaches to the evolution of development economics and the reasons for their current state of impasse, and suggests some areas in which this work may still be capable of providing useful contributions. Development economics was one of the few economics sub‐disciplines where Marxian approaches were considered to offer a key perspective and had a wider influence on more mainstream analysis. We expl…

It hardly needs stating that emphatic claims are frequently made about the relationship between economic globalisation processes and the evolution of global inequality and poverty. For critics of e
"Heavy Constraints on a "Weightless World: Resources and the New Economy
Late 1990s claims of a shift toward a new economy in the United States and other developed economies were said to accelerate earlier trends reducing the material content of production. The shift toward a postindustrial services economy is said to have been accentuated by application of new information and communications technologies, dramatically reducing the material content of production. This offers the possibility for continuous economic expa…
Global Transformations: Politics, Economics and Culture
Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the 1999 Conference was the plenary session in which Professors David Held and Mahdi Elmandjra came together to discuss the theme of ‘“Globalization”: Democracy and Diversity’. The Conference also witnessed the launch of Global Transformations (Polity Press, 1999), at which David Held was joined by two of his three coauthors, Professor Anthony McGrew and Dr Jonathan Perraton. Global Transformations is the prod…

Global Transformations: Politics, Economics, and Culture
"This book throws new light on the complex processes that are reshaping the contemporary world. All too often debates about globalization - and about whether it implies the end of the nation-state - have descended into polemics and confusion. Global Transformations overcomes these difficulties. Based on many years of original research, it maps the shape and scope of globalization and provides a comprehensive introduction to the subject, presentin…

Economic Globalization and the Nation-State: Shifting Balances of Power
Economic globalization is an idea that has been around long enough to ensure that much of its original analytical promise and explanatory potential has been drowned by hype and tarnished by overinflated claims. In some of the more extreme positions, which we refer to as hyperglobalization, it has been argued that we now live in a world in which social processes and institutions operate predominantly at a global scale. National economies, in parti…
