The Garb of White Nationalism in the Nineteenth-Century United States
This article examines the development of sartorial visual itineraries for nativism and white nationalism in the United States between about 1840 and 1865. For scholars studying the history of racism in the United States, the documents of so-called “scientific racism” are of paramount importance. These privilege the biovisual body as a site of epistemological and ontological truth. But the first years of the nineteenth century witnessed the prolif…
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston is typically understood as an unusual aesthetic structure specific to American fine art and collecting. Yet the Museum resembled various late nineteenth-century mass spectacles inspired by the city of Venice, including Imre Kiralfy’s “Venice in London” and the Columbian Exposition of 1893. Focusing on the Venetian theme in both the museum and spectacles allows us to see the museum as part of a late ni…
A form of life in which art is not art”
This essay examines early nineteenth-century US literature that fought for increased compensation and copyright protection for authors. Instead of dismissing this literature as a form of complaint, as many scholars do, I take writers’ concerns seriously, but I also look at the difficulty even professional writers faced in mounting any kind of case for themselves as paid creative personnel. Even when writers made a rational argument to explain why…
Restyling an Old World
This essay looks at the mid-nineteenth-century American bourgeois mania for imitating "OldWorld" aristocratic fashion, a trend exemplied by the sartorial antics of celebrated New York dandy and magazinist Nathaniel Parker Willis. Although Willis, and bourgeois Europhilia generally, are usually regarded by critics as a rather sad, colonial throwback, the cult of Old World imitation, I argue, was very much a vernacular phenomenon, one whose aim was…
An Idle Industry
An Idle Industry: Nathaniel Parker Willis and the Workings of Literary Leisure Sandra Tomc (bio) Writing in his Farrago series for various New England papers in the 1790s, Joseph Dennie, one of the early republic’s most self-conscious Federalist aristocrats, described himself as a lover of “the desultory style,” a perennial “lounger” and the author of works read by those wishing “to waste time.” 1 There was nothing irreverent and very little play…
