Caring at home, caring for the home: Women’s caring practices over the course of their residential trajectories in Barcelona
Credit labour: Navigating household debt in Southern Europe
In dialogue with scholarship on social reproduction and debt, this article discusses the financialization of domestic economies through the concept of credit labour. Based on comparative research in Southern Europe (Greece and Spain), we analyse the ways in which labour is mobilized along different trajectories of indebted kinship networks. Alongside their similarities – including their familist welfare regimes and the importance of homeownership…
Managing problem debt in Europe: Introduction to the theme section
This introduction to the theme section proposes the concept of problem debt, understood as household debt deviating from actors’ and institutionalized norms about its course, and presents a relational and historical realist approach focused on the practices of marking and managing problem debt. We discuss key emic perspectives on problem debt, agencies directly involved in its management (debt apparatuses), and the interaction of varied understan…
People without history in financial capitalism: A Wolfian approach to recent debates in the anthropology of debt
In Wolf's EPWH, the importance of debt for scaffolding the expansion of the capitalist mode of production was shown repeatedly, despite not being treated as a distinct phenomenon. In the forty years that have gone by since the publication of the book, financial debt has gained centrality in global accumulation processes. The advancing frontier of financialization, reminiscent of that of earlier capitalist expansion, as well as its effects on part…
State action and the expansion of finance during the Spanish housing crisis: Alleviating or amplifying the social impacts of financialization
This paper addresses the entanglements, complicities and collisions between financialization processes and state action during the current housing crisis in Spain, with a focus on Catalonia and the Barcelona area in the last decade. Departing from the assumption that housing financialization has been a major driver of the crisis, state interventions, including housing policies and legal regulations imposed on financial and real estate markets and…
Limiting Mortgagors’ Liability and Questioning the Obligation to Repay: Vindicatory Approaches to Housing Justice
This article addresses different approaches to the spate of home repossessions experienced in Spain after the burst of the housing bubble in 2008. It considers the diverging ways in which various involved actors – legislators setting regulatory frameworks, debt advisors from governmental and non-governmental agencies, judges ruling on repossession procedures, anti-repossession movements advocating debt refusal and the ‘self-defence’ of the right …
Overindebtedness and Resistance
During the first two decades of the 21st century, a wide anthropological literature has tackled the social nature of debt and credit under contemporary capitalism, with its increasing centrality linked to financialization processes that involve the commodification of different kinds of debt. Indebtedness appears in different modalities and reaches different scales: that of individuals or households (consumption credit, mortgages), that of entrepr…
Good faith debtors' and the deservingness of debt relief during the Spanish home repossessions crisis
In the early years of the recent economic crisis in Spain, as the rate of mortgage default began to raise, hegemonic discourses depicted defaulting debtors as having lived “beyond their means,” and therefore as culprits of their own situation. From 2009 on, given the huge scale of the phenomenon and promoted by anti-repossessions movements, an alternative narrative emerged: the crisis was redefined as a collective scam perpetrated by banking elit…
Flexible Industrial Work in the European Periphery: Factory Regimes and Changing Working‐Class Cultures in the Spanish Steel Industry
This article explores how two steel industry firms operating in northern Spain have adapted to neoliberalism and globalization. Despite their geographical proximity, the comparison between their different trajectories, production, and ownership profiles highlights how their distinct factory regimes, while becoming entangled in global market dynamics, have allowed the emergence of contrasting definitions of workers’ identities, labor politics, and…
To repay or not to repay: Financial vulnerability among mortgage debtors in Spain
In the framework of the current wave of home repossessions, many Spanish households struggle to keep up with repayments before going into arrears. Their financial vulnerability is not a simple function of the availability of income as they are repaying debts. Rather, it is to be understood in combination with a differential access to other resources that may help households to cope with hardship. Factors that help to keep up with repayments may i…
Mortgage indebtedness and home repossessions as symptoms of the financialisation of housing provisioning in Spain
This paper addresses a particular aspect of financialisation: how mortgages taken out by ordinary people in order to become home owners have been the object of securitisation processes, that is to say, have been used by banking institutions to issue financial derivatives that are then sold to investors. Despite taking place on the abstract arena of financial markets, this process has crucial consequences for people's livelihoods, as it is anchore…
The Spanish Mortgage Crisis and the Re-emergence of Moral Economies in Uncertain Times
During the Spanish housing bubble, the mass access to mortgages for private homeownership, and the subsequent acceptance of the debtor–creditor agreement, was founded on common perceptions of secure income, endless economic growth, rising housing prices, and investing for the future. Assumptions about the prosperity of household economies were consistent with linear understandings of life projects, where the purchase of a home was a landmark even…
Exchange networks and free shops in Berlin: Gifts and commodities in ‘alternative’ consumption experiences
This paper is based on an ethnography of ‘alternative’ consumption practices in the inner city of the former East Berlin. Non-monetary exchange networks (Tauschringe) and ‘free shops’ (Umsonstläden) have been examined. In Umsonstläden, the contemporary ideology of the ‘pure’ gift (Parry 1986; Carrier 1995) is at play: objects are freely given and totally alienated from their owners. In turn, Tauschringe sometimes induce gift-giving practices enta…
