Mental health of college sex workers
This study explored the impact of developmental and recent traumas on PTSD, anxiety, and depression among a sample of university students ( N = 410), including students who engaged in sex work during college. Using linear and hierarchical regressions, the study examined whether gender-based violence and potentially exploitative activities in college, specifically sexual assault (SA), sex work, sex trafficking, and intimate partner violence (IPV) …
Moving from features to functions
Contact with nature can contribute to health and wellbeing, but knowledge gaps persist regarding the environmental characteristics that promote these benefits. Understanding and maximising these benefits is particularly important in urban areas, where opportunities for such contact is limited. At the same time, we are facing climate and ecological crises which require policy and practice to support ecosystem functioning. Policies are increasingly…
The effect of parental alcohol use on alcohol use disorder in young adulthood
INTRODUCTION: Parental alcohol use and problems are risk factors for alcohol use disorder (AUD), and these effects may be mediated by adolescent alcohol expectancies and consumption. In the present study, we tested the direct effects of mothers' and fathers' alcohol consumption on young adult AUD, as well as the indirect effects through adolescent maximum alcohol use, alcohol consumption, and alcohol expectancies. METHODS: Participants were 5160 …
Suicidal ideation during adolescence
BACKGROUND: Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) constitute a central public health concern in adolescence. Previous studies emphasized the difficulty to cope with negative life events during adolescence as a risk factor for STB. Familial and genetic liability has also been documented to explain STB risk. Nevertheless, less is known about aggregate genetic liability and its possible interaction with negative life events. Moreover, information is…

Coffee and energy drink use patterns in college freshmen
The response pattern was ubiquitous, with ED + Co most likely, Co intermediate, and NoCE least likely to endorse a broad range of substance use, problem alcohol behaviors, and familial risk factors. The finding that the Co group differed from both the ED + Co and NoCE groups on 8 measures and from the NoCE group on one additional measure underscores the importance of looking at coffee in addition to EDs when considering associations between caffe…
Racial Discrimination and Alcohol Problems
Developing community-based health education strategies with family history
These results provide evidence that perceived threat mediates the association between FH and engagement with health education. Currently available health education programs may benefit from considering the role of FH in an individual's motivation for participation in health education activities alongside other factors
Alcohol consumption and internalising disorders in young adults of ALSPAC
Introduction Depression and harmful alcohol consumption contribute significantly to the global health burden, but in young adults, this relationship is under-researched and conflicted. The aim of this study was to determine the sex-based prevalence and the association between internalising disorders such as depression and alcohol use disorders. Method Using the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, we assessed the sex-specific prevalen…
Pubertal Development Moderates the Importance of Environmental Influences on Depressive Symptoms in Adolescent Girls and Boys
The Landscape Ecology of Water Catchments
Policy demands informed decisions about the consequences for the physical, chemical and biological environment within a river catchment. This represents a significant challenge to scientists since many of the determining factors operate at relatively small spatial scales. Summarizing the effects of land-use change on the environmental aspects at a river-catchment scale demands the integration of complex information collated at the smaller spatial…
