Articulating conditions for geological carbon storage
This study examines how communities in three European contexts (depopulated rural Spain, rural industrial France, and coastal Portugal) articulate conditions for accepting geological CO2 storage. Drawing on engagement activities conducted within a Horizon 2020 project (2021–2026) across regions with no prior carbon capture and storage (CCS) experience, we identify a pattern of conditional acceptance that is not well captured by binary framings of…
Thermal Security and the Lived Experience of Urban Heat Waves
This article explores the concept of thermal security as an analytical lens for understanding how individuals experience, interpret, and respond to urban heat waves. Drawing on Anthony Giddens' notion of ontological security, thermal security refers to the continuity and reliability of safe and comfortable thermal conditions that allow people to sustain everyday routines and a sense of existential stability. Through a systematic review of 26 qual…
Barcelona residents’ concerns of heatwaves, air pollution, and noise
Environmental stressors pose significant threats to human well-being, especially in urban areas. While extensive research—particularly in the United States—has documented higher exposures in socially vulnerable neighborhoods, studies that examine and compare residents’ perceptions of multiple environmental risks, while also accounting for actual exposure levels and neighborhood characteristics, remain relatively more limited. Our study addresses …
Who should lead nuclear fusion research? Cross-national evidence on public–private governance preferences in Europe
Fiekowsky, Peter y Douglis, Carole (2022). Climate Restoration
The clock is ticking
If it can be made to work, fusion energy offers the potential for unlimited, clean energy. This prospect has seen substantial investment in the science and engineering behind fusion in order to demonstrate its viability. As key societal stakeholders, the opinions and actions of publics can shape the success of emerging energy technologies. To date, however, there have been relatively few studies focused on the public acceptability of fusion. The …
Understanding Public Acceptance of Automobile Restriction Policies
In recent decades, several Latin American cities have implemented policy instruments to reduce urban air pollution and traffic congestion such as license plate-based restrictions on car use. Our research analyzes the factors influencing the public acceptance of these urban policies in four cities: Bogotá, Mexico City, Santiago de Chile, and Quito. We use semi-structured interviews and digital diaries to examine participants' beliefs and emotions …

Examining Patterns of Air Quality Perception
Various medium-sized cities in southern Chile are saturated by air pollution caused by woodsmoke. In this study, we developed a segmentation model to assess the public's perceptions, understanding of health risks and emotional responses to poor air quality. To date, this is the first segmentation model dealing with public perception in cities contaminated by woodsmoke. A survey ( N = 489) was conducted in Temuco and Padre las Casas, Chile, which …
Agency and structure in a sociotechnical transition
Despite each level of the multilevel perspective of sociotechnical transitions reflecting a different degree of structuration, structuration perspectives have been little used to help explain sociotechnical change and stasis. Here we show how ‘strong structuration’ can be used to theorise the role of agency in sociotechnical systems in a way that brings together psychological and sociological perspectives. Strong structuration gives weight not on…
How to address citizens’ practices and policies on sustainability? A consultative tool for brokering policy-related knowledge between the worlds of policymaking and everyday citizens’ life
An innovative investigative approach (STAVE), combining elements of research, engagement and brokerage, was used to uncover policy assumptions and daily experiences related to energy use practices. Exploratory work within three policymaker institutions and eight reconvened focus groups were carried out in three different European countries (France, Germany, Spain). All the groups explored active practices with regard to energy saving at household…
Perception of risk from air pollution and reported behaviors
We investigate how public perceptions of air pollution, risk beliefs and self-reported actions to limit personal exposure to ambient air pollution vary across cities. Our analysis also examines the extent to which a number of individual-level variables are associated to self-protective and information-seeking actions due to bad air quality. Data was collected through a questionnaire survey in four cities with a total sample of 1202 inhabitants. W…

Identifiquem sis gr…

Institutional dimensions underlying public trust in information on technological risk
This paper examines the determinants of trust in public information on technological risk in a petrochemical complex located in Tarragona (Spain). Data from focus groups (eight) and a questionnaire survey (N = 400) are drawn together to analyse how two local communities exposed to major chemical hazards perceive information on risk and its sources. Results show how trust relies on two main factors, namely expertise and trustworthiness, that are s…
