  • Everything comes at a price: The impact of eliminating harmful subsidies in the Spanish marine resources industry

Open Access•Alberto Roca Florido, Elena Padilla et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2023

One of the objectives for the European Horizon 2021–2027 is completely eliminating harmful fishery subsidies. Spain was the country that received the greatest amount of the previous European Marine Fishery Funds framed within EU horizon-2020. We explore the potential impacts of eliminating these harmful subsidies in the sectors related to marine resources in Spain. We address it with the novelty of applying an input–output model, disaggregating m…

  • The determinants of the inequality in CO 2 emissions per capita between developing countries and their implications for environmental policy

    Open Access•Elena Padilla, Evans Jadotte•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 8

We analyze the differences in CO 2 emissions from fuel combustion per capita between developing countries and how these are influenced by a series of affluence, structural, demographic, and climatic variables. First, a regression analysis provides new evidence on the determinants of CO 2 emissions in developing countries. We find an N‐shaped relationship with GDP per capita and a negative impact of the agriculture share and average daily minimum …

  • CO 2 emissions of the construction sector in Spain during the real estate boom: Input–output subsystem analysis and decomposition

Open Access•Vicent Alcántara Escolano, Elena Padilla•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2021

The construction sector is of special interest within the Spanish economy, given its large economic dimension and environmental impact, particularly during the real estate boom prior to the last economic crisis that started in 2008. We study the CO 2 emissions of construction activities in 2007, at the height of the construction boom, in the context of the productive structure of Spain. For this, we use an input–output subsystem method, which all…

  • Key sectors in greenhouse gas emissions in Spain: An alternative input–output analysis

Open Access•Vicent Alcántara Escolano, Vicent Alcántara et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2020

We develop an alternative input–output approach and apply it to the determination of key sectors in emissions. This methodology allows us to assess and classify the different productive sectors according to their greenhouse gas emissions and the role that they play in the productive structure, as well as the participation of their output in the total volume of production. In contrast with previous approaches, we do not focus on the responsibility…

  • Carbon pricing in climate policy: Seven reasons, complementary instruments, and political economy considerations

    Open Access•Andrea Baranzini, J C J M Van Den Bergh et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2017•Cited by: 28•References: 14

Carbon pricing is a recurrent theme in debates on climate policy. Discarded at the 2009 COP in Copenhagen, it remained part of deliberations for a climate agreement in subsequent years. As there is still much misunderstanding about the many reasons to implement a global carbon price, ideological resistance against it prospers. Here, we present the main arguments for carbon pricing, to stimulate a fair and well‐informed discussion about it. These …
