Uncovering Third Space in Virtual Transnational Partnership: Transdisciplinary and Transcultural Transformation
This qualitative case study explores how two English language teachers from South Korea and Taiwan developed transcultural dispositions as they participated in a virtual professional development program. The study employed third space as a conceptual framework and the third generation of cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT-3rd) as an analytical framework to uncover the teachers’ learning experiences. Findings from this study reveal the dyna…
The Online News Act and Ethnic Media
Background: This article examines the implications of the Online News Act for ethnic media. Analysis: We draw on an examination of parliamentary debates and committee testimonies, media coverage, and interviews. Conclusions and Implications: We raise concerns 1) that ethnic media experienced difficulty participating in the legislative process surrounding the Online News Act, 2) about the eligibility of small ethnic media outlets for compensation,…
Digital journalism, ethnic media, and transcultural potential
Ethnic media serve a myriad of functions within their respective ethnic communities. However, less attention has been paid to their role within broader society. Using Brantner and Herczeg’s concept of “transcultural ethnic media,” this study identifies typologies of online English or bilingual ethnic media originating in Canada and explores their transcultural potential. A mixed methods approach, through the examination of these media’s mission s…

Cultural Diversity in Canadian Television: The Case of CBC’s Kim’s Convenience
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Kim’s Convenience is the first Asian-led sitcom in Canadian broadcasting. This popular sitcom, lauded by both audiences and the television industry, joins the wave of minority-led production which started only recently in Canada, despite Canada’s pride in multiculturalism as one of its national characteristics. Emerging within Canada’s unique model of “multiculturalism within a bilingual framework,” Kim’s C…
Ethnic Media in the Digital Age
Ethnic media are media produced for, and frequently by, immigrants, ethnic and linguistic minority groups, and indigenous populations. These media represent a sector of the broader media industry that has seen considerable growth globally, even while many mainstream, legacy media have struggled to survive or have ceased to exist, largely due to the emergence of new communication technologies. What is missing in the literature is a careful examina…
Multi-ethnic public sphere andaccessible ethnic media: Mapping online English-language ethnic media
The multi-ethnic public sphere requires a functioning media system that facilitates intercultural dialogue across communities. As producers of multi-ethnic voices, the role of ethnic media is important in this debate. However, studies so far have focused on ethnic media’s role within their respective communities rather than their role within broader society. Equally, theoretical debates on ethnic media as independent spheres focus on speaking by …
The Commercialization of Journalism: Ethnic media, news production, and business strategies in the digital era
Ethnic media’s dual role of delivering news about both “here”, the country of settlement, and “there”, the country of origin, is well known. While ethnic media studies generally confirm an integrative role of ethnic media, concerns over their leaning toward “there” rather than “here”, as seen in the significantly higher coverage of “there”, have been simultaneously raised, considering the potential civil society role of ethnic media within and ac…
Ethnic Media
This chapter traces the evolution of ethnic media by examining various aspects—terminologies, historical trajectories, and trends in production and consumption—and suggests that new critical approaches to understanding ethnic media are needed. Variations of the term reflect an emphasis on different aspects of ethnic media. Some scholars propose user-oriented terms that highlight specific projects pursued by these media for “ethnic” or “minority” …
Instrumentalization of Ethnic Media
The ever widening gap in public discourse within a multicultural society is of concern. Among many factors, continuing and emerging practices of marginalization of ethnic minorities, ethnic media, and ethnic discourse in the media industries in Canada deserve attention. Parallel to the under-representation of ethnic minorities in mainstream media production and content, ethnic media organizations and the discourse they produce are equally under-r…
Ethnic media as communities of practice: The cultural and institutional identities
In an increasingly multicultural, multiethnic, and multilingual media environment, ethnic media are an important part of the public sphere, and the process in which ethnic discourse is produced deserves attention. This article advances Husband’s work on ethnic media as communities of practice by exploring ethnic media of young diaspora. Just as ethnic communities are heterogeneous across ethnic groups, depending on immigration history, demographi…
Women in ethnic news media
The representation of women in so-called mainstream media has been well studied; however, less is known about this representation in ethnic media, especially in North America where the ethnic media sector is constantly growing. Ethnic media’s unique news sourcing strategy – that is, a mix of news locally produced by local staff writers, news outsourced from local mainstream media, and news internationally imported from the country of origin – sug…

Ethnic Media under a Multicultural Policy: The Case of the Korean Media in British Columbia
Vancouver is not only the second most diverse city in Canada, but it is also the site of major ethnic specialty services. It is home to one of the four multilingual television stations in Canada and more than one hundred ethnic media outlets. Together they serve approximately twenty-three language groups. Among British Columbia's top three "mother tongue and home language" groups -Chinese, Punjabi, and Korean - the Korean community offers the lar…
