Evaluating the effects of ruminal incubation and abomasal enzymatic digestion on the germination potential of Bromus tectorum
Targeted grazing is a management strategy for fuel reduction and cheatgrass control in the Great Basin. However, concerns of cattle acting as endozoochorous seed dispersal agents of invasive grass species have been expressed. In vitro and in situ techniques of ruminal fermentation and enzymatic digestion were employed to evaluate seed mortality. Our results showed a nearly complete inhibition of germination after 36 hours in the rumen followed by…
John Roy Stewart and his genealogical legacy
The following account provides a strong case for the identification of immediate descendants of Colonel John Roy Stewart, soldier in Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army and poet, one of whose present-day male line descendants has taken a Y-DNA test. This has revealed what is probably one of several genetic markers distinct to descendants of ‘The Wolf of Badenoch.’ The account lays out important evidence to support the genealogical case and to tell the s…

Robert Austin, The state, literacy, and popular education in Chile, 1964–1990 . Lanham, Maryland, Lexington Books, 2003. Foreword by Asuncion Lavrin. 416pp
Sigmund Freud's association of the masses with evil expressed the unconscious desire of many intellectuals to justify the political suppression of the masses. For it was a common fear amongst the elite of Europe that the accession of the masses to complete social power through literacy and popular culture was the gravest threat to civilisation. The-introduction of universal elementary education made every aspect of the production and disseminatio…

Heyerdahl's Kon Tiki Theory and the Denial of the Indigenous Past
On 28 April 1947, a nine-balsa-log raft, its Norwegian flag fluttering, was towed out of the Peruvian port of Callao far enough to be swept westwards across the Pacific Ocean by strong ocean curren
An unprofitable enterprise: The Iron and Steel Company of Trinidad and Tobago (Iscott)
The state everywhere is in retreat. More than 10,000 state-owned enterprises in over 100 countries have been privatised. 1 Privatisation international, April 1992, p.7. Privatisation has been used as a remedy for inefficient and unprofitable state-owned enterprises, or for ideologically rolling back the power of the state over the national economy. Whatever the reason, the assumption has been that private ownership is a more efficient system than…
