Emergence and growth of professional doctorates in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia
This article examines the development and growth of professional doctorates in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. It provides an overview of the development of the doctoral degree from its establishment at the universities of Paris and Bologna, and highlights the emergence of new forms of doctorates that have challenged the PhD. The examination indicates that similar growth patterns for applied doctorates have occurred in t…
The Relationship Between Academic Life Conditions and Perceived Sources of Faculty Stress Over Time
Many assertions have been made that the changing landscape of postsecondary education has resulted in a higher level of occupational stress, thereby presenting a potential problem for the recruitment and retention of individuals in academe. However, it has yet to be empirically demonstrated that stressors for faculty have in fact changed by nature or intensity during the last decade of the 20th century. The present study compares the dimensions a…
Evidence of Convergent and Discriminant Validity in Three Measures of College Outcomes
The present study examined the correlations among three measures of college outcomes: The College Outcome Measures Program, the Academic Profile, and the Defining Issues Test. Results indicated statistically significant ( p
Effects of Individualized and Structured College Curricula on Students’ Performance and Satisfaction
The present study compared the effects of individualized and structured curricula on the academic performance and follow-up satisfaction of 428 students who applied for admission to an individualized degree program at a large midwestern institution. Results of this randomized experiment indicated that the two groups were indistinguishable in persistence, graduation rate, academic success, and overall course selection patterns, but that they diffe…

Experiential and Affective Correlates of Math Anxiety in Adult Women
Mathematics anxiety has been discussed as one of the factors contributing to poor mathematics performance, especially among women. Although many programs have been developed for its treatment, little research has been conducted concerning its correlates. The present study examines correlates of mathematics anxiety among the 69 female participants in a program designed to help individuals overcome their fears and become more competent in mathemati…
Paired Comparisons Intransitivity
The present study investigated the long-term stability of response intransitivity in the method of paired comparisons. The test-retest time interval was two years, during which the two groups of subjects progressed from eighth grade to tenth grade (N = 235) and from tenth grade to twelfth grade (N = 175). Intransitivity scores obtained from two administrations of the Minnesota Importance Questionnaire were correlated to determine stability. Resul…
Predicting Success for Graduate Study in Business for English-Speaking and Non-English-Speaking Students
The purpose of the present study was to examine the predictive validity of the Admissions Test for Graduate Study in Business (ATGSB) and alternative predictors for English-speaking and non-English speaking students in a Master's Degree Business Administration Program. Seven criterion variables (e.g., cumulative graduate GPA, number of incompletes received, number of months to graduation) were chosen to represent a variety of indices of academic …
Relationship between Ego Development and Attitudes toward Women
This study examined the relationship between liberal attitudes toward the role of women (as measured by the Attitudes Toward Women Scale) and mature ego level (as measured by the Washington University Sentence Completion Test) in 56 freshman women volunteers (28 enrolled in Women's Studies and 28 in freshman English). Liberal attitudes were positively correlated (.21 to .39) with both global measures of ego development for each group of subjects.…
Paired Comparisons Intransitivity
The present study investigated the extent to which intransitivity, as measured by the total circular triad (TCT) score in the method of paired comparisons, varies across different domains of content and across different groups of subjects. Three paired comparisons instruments were administered to 276 high school students and to 358 college students. Results indicated statistically significant ( p ≤ .001) correlations among the three TCT indices f…
