  • Reflections on ‘race’ and the biologization of difference

    Katya Gibel Azoulay•ARTICLE•Patterns of Prejudice•2006•Cited by: 4

In this article Gibel Azoulay critiques the tenacity of the correlation between ‘race’ as a socio-political notion and ‘race’ as a biological entity in academic circles in general and medical research in particular. Legacies of nineteenth-century scientific racism percolate into the public sphere, facilitating a uniquely US American cultural consensus that imagines and markets external physiological features as gross criteria for making distincti…

  • Not an Innocent Pursuit

    Open Access•Katya Gibel Azoulay•ARTICLE•Developing World Bioethics•2003

This commentary questions the presumption in genetic research that a biological connection exists between populations identified as Jewish. The author emphasises that identifying individuals as Jewish based on biological criteria is a sociological process that can draw attention away from other social mechanisms affecting identity construction. She also encourages critical consideration of the possible racialised thinking behind genetic anthropol…

  • Jewishness after mount sinai

    Katya Gibel Azoulay•ARTICLE•Identities•2001•References: 19

The absence of attention to Black‐Jewish identities in the discourse of multiracialism results from exaggerated attention to Black‐Jewish relations, as well as a conceptual slippage between Jewishness and whiteness. This essay proposes that identities in the public arena are always political, and that racial binaries continue in spite of the authorization of multiple‐box checking in the U.S. Census. When Jewish parents in the U.S. identify themse…

  • The New Colored People

    Katya Gibel Azoulay•REVIEW•African American Review•1999•Cited by: 1

With a foreword by Richard E. Vander Ross In recent years, dramatic increases in racial intermarriage have given birth to a generation who refuse to be shoehorned into neat, pre-existing racial categories. Energized by a refusal to allow mixed-race people to be rendered invisible, this movement lobbies aggressively to have the category multiracial added to official racial classifications. While applauding the self-awareness and activism at the ro…

A suitable correlation can be made to represent the simulated distillation of heavy oils starting from thennoaravimetric measurements. This method is applicable to hydrocarbons having an initial boiling point equal or greater than 200°C. The simulated thermogravimetric distillation fit was obtained from experiments with the standard compounds obtained from ASTM D-2887-83 (Boiling range distribution of petroleum fractions by gas chromatography). • Experience, empathy and strategic essentialism

    Katya Gibel Azoulay•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•1997•Cited by: 5•References: 23

This article examines the implications of the language of 'cultural diversity' and 'difference' for syllabi, curricula and educators in academic institutions. The author suggests an intellectual orientation which moves away from the social vocabulary of 'inclusion' to that of 'multivocality'. Such an approach requires an interdisciplinary model whose departure point anticipates the need to teach students the skills of interrogating the relationsh…
