  • Stupid bullies and clapping clowns: Resistance to power in Nuruddin Farah’s “Variations on the Theme of an African Dictatorship” trilogy

    Open Access•Tim Woods•ARTICLE•Journal of Postcolonial Writing•2026

Through an examination of Nuruddin Farah’s representation of the intertwined authoritarian power in state, family, and gender relations in his “Variations on the Theme of an African Dictatorship” trilogy, this article argues that Farah develops a Foucauldian model of “effective history” as a postcolonial counter-narrative to nationalist dictatorial conceptions of history and social relations. Through the voices of a multi-gendered, multi-generati…

  • Aquinas in Brooklyn: Frank Samperi’s “Objectivist Poetics”

    Open Access•Tim Woods•ARTICLE•Journal of American Studies•2025

Frank Samperi is a neglected twentieth-century American poet who produced a large body of poetry. Affiliated closely with Objectivist poetics through the mentorship of Louis Zukofsky, Samperi’s work is significantly influenced by the Catholic writings of Aquinas and Dante. With a commitment to linguistic self-reflexivity, an ethics of otherness, and a resistance to abstraction and identity thinking, Samperi’s work enhances and expands our underst…

  • Testing the greenwashing assessment framework

Open Access•Stephanie Hill, Noemi Nemes et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2025

Greenwashing is of growing concern as the world struggles to respond to the triple planetary crises of pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. New terminology to label greenwashing has entered public discourse and new policies and legal processes have challenged green claims, particularly in advertising. These developments demand a review and revision of the terminology used in greenwashing research and analysis of its application to st…

  • Learning From Our Mistakes: Corporate Front Groups and the Limits of Revelation in Climate Politics

    Open Access•Tim Woods, Tim Wood•ARTICLE•Social Media + Society•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Fossil fuel companies have made major investments in mobilizing citizen support in recent decades, funding advocacy groups to stoke climate denial, doubt, and delay. Scholars and activists have tended to condemn these 'front groups' as corporate mouthpieces, calling for new laws mandating disclosure of the financial relationship between companies and their political scions. Critiques like these tap into vital political impulses; however, they hav…

  • Publicity and Transparency

    Open Access•Tim Woods, Tim Wood et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 40

Publicity and transparency are two foundational ideas about the proper structure of democratic communication. In a context of utterly transformed public discourse, it is time to rethink the value of these concepts and especially their relationship to one another. This special issue aims to test prevailing assumptions about these terms as they are reshaped in the present era of organized promotional culture. To begin, the present introduction reca…

  • The many voices of business: Framing the Keystone pipeline in US and Canadian news

Open Access•Tim Woods, Tom Wood et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 11

Corporations rarely enter political battles alone. They have long partnered with trade associations to articulate industry views, and more recently have begun routinely creating their own activist organizations to act as allies. Amid this turn toward grassroots corporate organizing, how is the voice – or perhaps voices – of business articulated in the news? Using the case study of coverage of the Keystone bitumen pipeline, I offer a framing analy…

  • Who Says What or Nothing at All? Speakers, Frames, and Frameless Quotes in Unauthorized Immigration News in the United States, Norway, and France

    Open Access•R Benson, Tim Woods et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2015•Cited by: 35•References: 27

Determining the speakers and arguments that dominate the news has long been a core task of media sociology. Yet systematic evidence linking the two-who says what or nothing at all-is lacking in news analysis, especially on the important issue of immigration. In this article, we analyze quoted sources and issue frames in U.S., French, and Norwegian news coverage of unauthorized immigration during 2011 and 2012. Supporting claims of transnational m…

  • South African literature in the time of Aids

    Open Access•Tim Woods•ARTICLE•The Journal of Commonwealth…•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 13

The political response to the crisis of HIV/AIDS in South Africa has been notoriously slow and chequered during the late 1990s and early 2000s. A sustained literary response, alert to the impact of the disease has been even slower, although this gathered pace by the mid-2000s in South Africa. This article investigates a number of these significant literary representations in relation to the understanding of HIV/AIDS in the South African public sp…

  • Human rights, human wrongs: Literatures of Captivity

    Helena Grice, Tim Woods•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2012

Following Richard Rorty's lead, this article does not foreground debates on human rights to the exclusion of the literary; instead, it examines bodies of literature that articulate and express these concerns about human rights, sometimes explicitly, but more often by implication. It is within this context that we argue that a new sub-genre of writing can be discerned and shaped, one we label ‘literatures of captivity’. This article considers the …

  • Corporate Diversification Revisited: The Political-Legal Environment, the Multilayer-Subsidiary Form, and Mergers and Acquisitions

    Open Access•Harland Prechel, Theresa Morris et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 42

This article examines causes of product-line diversification in the largest 200 U.S. corporations between 1986 and 1996. The analysis shows that some corporations decreased their level of diversification. However, in contrast with previous studies, other corporations became more diversified. Change in the number of first-level subsidiaries and the value of mergers and acquisitions influenced corporate diversification. In contrast with the multidi…

  • Marriage after divorce: The challenge for the church of England

Tim Woods, Timothy Woods•ARTICLE•Islam and Christian–Muslim…•2006•Cited by: 1

The decision of the Church of England to permit the further marriage in church of people who have been previously divorced was taken after much reflection and debate. This paper offers a brief outline of the key issues that had to be faced, addressing questions arising from New Testament material, the tradition and context of the Church of England itself, and ways that doctrine has been formulated and has then evolved. In particular the question …

  • Capitalist Class Relations, the State, and New Deal Foreign Trade Policy

    Open Access•Tim Woods•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2003•Cited by: 2•References: 14

In this paper, I focus on the political influence of class forces surrounding the 1934 Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act (RTAA). The RTAA was instrumental because it shifted much of the trade-policy process from Congress to the Executive Branch. I find that capitalist class relations had a great impact on the development and passage of the RTAA. Despite the concerns of capitalists from the nationalist segment over their ability to influence Executi…

  • Critical Ethics: Text, Theory and Responsibility

    Open Access•Dominic Rainsford, Tim Woods•BOOK•Critical Ethics•1999

The current resurgence of ethics in the beleaguered humanities reflects an increasing anxiety about the value and utility of critical/philosophical debate in the wake of poststructuralism. This book a

  • Mending the Skin of Memory: Ethics and history in contemporary narratives

    Tim Woods•ARTICLE•Rethinking History•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The skin covering the memory of Auschwitz is tough. Sometimes, however, it bursts, and gives back its contents. In a dream, the will is powerless. And in these dreams, there I see myself again, me, yes me, just as I know I was: scarcely able to stand... pierced with cold, filthy, gaunt, and the pain is unbearable, so exactly the pain I suffered there, that I feel it again physically, I feel it again through my whole body, which becomes a block of…
