Genc Burazeri, Artan Goda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 18

OBJECTIVE: Extensive financial losses caused by the collapse of pyramid savings schemes led to the 1997 turmoil in Albania. The authors' aim was to assess the association of financial loss and social mobility with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) 6-9 years after the precipitous collapse. J D Kark, S Bar-Shany et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1985•References: 13

Seroconversion to hepatitis A virus was studied in a sub sample of 802 Israeli military recruits (611 men and 191 women) who were taking part in a randomised controlled trial of pre-exposure immune serum globulin (ISG) for the prevention of viral hepatitis. On intake into the service 35% of the men and 47% of the women were negative to hepatitis. A virus antibody (anti-HAV). After three years 7 of 71 men (9.9%) who had not received pre-exposure I…

  • Validity of maternal reporting of breast feeding history and the association with blood lipids in 17 year olds in Jerusalem

    J D Kark, G Troya et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1984•Cited by: 10•References: 12

The validity of mothers' reporting of the breast feeding history of their children more than 20 years after their birth was studied in a Jerusalem population. Among 74 study subjects, duration of breast feeding as ascertained from an interview was well correlated with that recorded in mother and child health clinic charts. Concordance was of similar magnitude in subgroups of ethnicity, mother's education, family size, and sex of child. Duration o…

  • Familial aggregation of blood pressure in a Jewish population sample in Jerusalem among ethnic and religious groupings

    Yechiel Friedlander, J D Kark•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1984•References: 21

Parent‐child and spouse correlations were studied in a sample of 935 Jerusalem Jewish families consisting of 935 children aged 17–18 years and their parents. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were adjusted by regression for sex, age, weight, height, and seasonality. Mother‐child correlations for SBP (0.16) and DBP (0.15) were higher than those of father‐child (SBP = 0.13; DBP = 0.09). Mid parent‐child correlations w…

    J D Kark•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1982•Cited by: 1•References: 11

A controlled trial with pre-exposure immune serum globulin was undertaken in Israel Defence Forces (IDF) recruits, an indigenous population living in a hyperendemic area for hepatitis A. The objective was to examine whether the prevailing IDF policy of postexposure administration of immune serum globulin prophylaxis should be modified to further reduce the incidence of infectious hepatitis in the IDF. Altogether 23 447 recruits were systematicall…

  • Smoking and epidemic influenza-like illness in female military recruits: A brief survey

    J D Kark, M Lebiush•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1981•References: 10

An outbreak of influenza-like disease caused illness among 48 per cent of 173 female military recruits, 35 per cent of whom smoked cigarettes. The risk of influenza-like illness was greater in smokers (60.0 per cent) than in nonsmokers (41.6 per cent), with a risk ratio of 1.44 (95 per cent CL 1.03-2.01). Among those ill, a significantly greater proportion of smokers visited the clinic than nonsmokers. This could have been due to more severe illn…
