A Contribution to the Study of the Scandinavian Influence in Eastern Europe of the 10th Cent. Ad
The article is the continuation of the earlier publication devoted to the interpretation of the decorations on the binding of the aurochs’ drinking-horn from the extremely rich burial of the 10th cent. in the Chernaya Mogila (Ukraine, Chernigov vicinities). The author considers the decoration as an illustration reflecting the central motif of the pagan Scandinavian mythology - “Twilight of the Gods” which is the main part of the first song in the…
Aurochs' Drinking Horn From the Chernaya Mogila Kurgan
This article examines the narrative images on the silver binding plate of the aurochs' drinking-horn from the Chernaya Mogila kurgan ("Black Grave"), located in modern Chernigov and dated to the 10th century. Первая миниатюра представляет руины древнерусского города Чюр-Михайлов; второй памятник имеет чужеземное название (Терклия). Он характеризуется в летописн…
Fatal woman of the 10th century through the eyes of medieval miniature painters
Magical Practices in Russia Today
The article is a record of a story of a visit to a witch-doctor in Modern Russia. The séance included the invocation of spirits of dead and alive persons, and also of Jesus Christ. Hypnosis and medium were used. It is to be noted that both witch-doctor and its client belong in this case to rather prosperous and educated Moscow dwellers. Some parallels from East-Slavic manuscript and folklore traditions and also from Russian classical literature a…
The Sorcerer’s Stone
The contents of a manuscript text of Byelorussian origin dated to the mid-sixteenth century, discovered by A. Turilov, are discussed in this article. The text is a magical instruction for the invocation of rain, snow, draught, hail and storm with the help of a magical stone taken from a beast or bird, permanently moistened with fresh blood. The text is a part of Prince Semen Belskii’s archive, who re-emigrated back to Poland from Muscovy. The mag…
