  • Habits of Connection: From Sustainability and Saviorship to Reciprocity and Relationship

Open Access•Maggie Wise, Bruce Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Experiential Education•2023

Background: 45–60% of global climate emissions come from individual consumerism choices. In Western culture, nature is seen as a resource, a series of challenges to conquer, limited to facts and figures, or a threat. As practices and language of sustainability still view the environment simply as a resource, and therefore as something separate from us that can be used, any gains in sustainability are simply band-aids covering the deep wound of re…

  • Exploring the Inclusive Praxis of Outward Bound Instructors

    Open Access•Robert P Warner, Bruce Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2020

Equity and inclusion are critical issues that need to be addressed in outdoor adventure education. Although some literature identifies inclusive practices for enhancing equity in outdoor adventure education, most research does not situate these practices within the contexts in which they were created and used. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore outdoor adventure education instructors’ inclusive praxis, and the conditions that inf…

  • Seasonal Trends in Acoustic Detection of Marine Mammals in Baffin Bay and Melville Bay, Northwest Greenland + Supplementary Appendix 1 (See Article Tools)

    Open Access•Héloïse Frouin-Mouy, Héloïse Frouin‐Mouy et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2017

The expansion of hydrocarbon exploration in northwest Greenland has made it increasingly important to understand the occurrence of marine mammals in the region. We describe the seasonal occurrence of marine mammals and the spatial distribution of their calls in Baffin Bay and Melville Bay. Four Autonomous Multichannel Acoustic Recorders (AMARs) were deployed during summer 2012 (late July to early October), five recorders during September 2013, an…

  • Environmental education in southern Africa: A case study of a secondary school in the Okavango Delta of Botswana

Kgosietsile Velempini, Bruce Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This study explored the extent to which teachers integrate environmental education and local environmental knowledge into the curriculum of a secondary school in the Okavango Delta of Botswana. In doing so, the study explored the potential value of place-based education in redressing concerns brought to light in postcolonial critiques of education in southern Africa. The study also found that efforts to integrate environmental education into the …

  • Acoustic Occurrence and Affiliation of Fin Whales Detected in the Northeastern Chukchi Sea, July to October 2007–10

    Open Access•Julien Delarue, S B Martin et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2013

Fin whales are common throughout the North Pacific region, particularly in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea, even though these areas were heavily depleted by decades of whaling. Whalers also took fin whales in the southwestern Chukchi Sea, but only five sightings have been reported for the entire Chukchi Sea in the past 30 years. Large-scale arrays consisting of 26 – 44 bottom-mounted acoustic recorders were deployed in the northeastern Chuk…

  • Acoustic Detections of Beluga Whales in the Northeastern Chukchi Sea, July 2007 to July 2008

Open Access•Julien Delarue, Marjo Laurinolli et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2011

Beluga calls were detected during two consecutive deployments of autonomous acoustic recorders in the northeastern Chukchi Sea. During the first deployment, calls were recorded between July and October 2007, primarily near the Barrow Canyon in July and August. During the second deployment, calls were detected in November 2007 off Point Lay and again between mid-April and June 2008 in a broad area 90 – 150 km off Point Lay and Wainwright, Alaska. …
