  • Lyme borreliosis risk perceptions, disease knowledge, and training among at-risk groups

Open Access•R Walsh, Rita G Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

These findings identify the need for more robust risk communication in Ireland, more training for at-risk groups, and the use of targeted awareness campaigns to address knowledge gaps. The implications of the study findings for international research are also discussed

  • Mainstreaming and Defamiliarizing the Rapture

R Walsh, Richard G Walsh•ARTICLE•Journal of the Bible and its…•2024

The popular Left Behind series has been credited with mainstreaming dispensational premillennialism, or fragments of that ideology, in U.S. popular culture. The less popular, but critically acclaimed HBO series The Leftovers , based on the novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta, attests to the ideology’s popularity while defamiliarizing its notions of Rapture and Messiah/Antichrist. While Left Behind apologizes for the ideology and strives to mak…

  • (Carrying the Fire on) No Road for Old Horses

    R Walsh•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Popular…•2012•References: 1

Three “major” movies have been based on the novels of Cormac McCarthy: All the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men, and The Road. In a landscape of loss, these fictions realize strange, new biblical stories about those who are neither chosen nor special and thus those who do not find the promise, are the prey of demons, and live after a secular apocalypse. These fictions are strange, new versions of Job in which no whirlwind answers, Job’s adve…

  • The Passion as Horror Film

    R Walsh•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Popular…•2008

The precursors of The Passion’s gory torture and crucifixion are action and horror films, not the gospels or Jesus films. Given his previous work, Gibson’s use of the suffering, action hero conventions is not unexpected. The more surprising use of horror techniques likely reflects horror’s popularity and the spread of its artifice through so much of recent cinema. The Passion so effectively displays crucifixion’s gore and violence that its “hidde…

  • The One Nation Group

    R Walsh, Robert J Walsh•ARTICLE•Twentieth Century British History•2000•Cited by: 4

The One Nation Group enjoys a mythic place in the history of the postwar Conservative Party. It has often been portrayed as being of extraordinary importance both for its early writings, One Nation (1950) and Change is Our Ally (1954), and for a behind-the-scenes parliamentary influence seen to exceed greatly that which would normally be expected from a private dining group of Conservative MPs. The group, with its firm association with ‘One Natio…

  • Effect of Price on Forecasts of Participation in Fish and Wildlife Recreation

    R Walsh, Richard G Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•1992•Cited by: 6•References: 2

A logit regression model of participation in fishing, hunting, and noncon-sumptive wildlife recreation is estimated based on national survey data. The model is specified both with and without price and cross-price variables. Otherwise, the nonprice variables included are the same in both equations. The two equations are used in long-run forecasts of participation and the effects are noted. The null hypothesis of no price effect is rejected in two…

  • Comparing long‐run forecasts of demand for fish and wildlife recreation

    R Walsh, Richard G Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•1989•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This study addresses the question of stability in the empirical relationships and predictability of the logit model. It compares two long‐run forecasts offish and wildlife recreation based on the 1980 and 1985 national surveys. The results show that nonconsumptive wildlife recreation will be the most rapidly growing activity. This trend is evident in both the 1980‐ and 1985‐based forecasts, with virtually identical results being obtained for medi…

  • Distribution and Efficiency Effects of Alternative Recreation Funding Methods

    R Walsh, Richard G Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•1989•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This paper examines the distribution effects of alternative recreation funding methods. Review of background concepts and case studies of local and distant recreation users of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota and of Colorado resident and nonresident participants in the Pikes Peak Marathon demonstrate the effects of entry fee and travel cost on the distribution of the loss in recreation benefits caused by alternative…

  • Valuing Option, Existence, and Bequest Demands for Wilderness

    R Walsh, Richard G Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•Land Economics•1984

To assess the relative importance of current costs and future benefits of nuclear waste storage, we develop a simple model of bequest value. The basic model of nonparternalistic altruism is extended to account for the uncertain nature of the externality. ...
